When my wife's 05 4.0 4x advance trac Explorer is put into reverse (not moving, foot on brake and shift to reverse) there is a rubbing sound from around the tranny pan. Doesn't happen in park or drive, just reverse.
The noise is definitely coming from the trans area and not the engine. It's not a sharp noise, just like something is rubbing. It's repetitive and fairly consistent with something that is spinning.
Another symptom that has gotten more frequent, is that the shifter doesn't want to come out of park and time and force are required to move it. She also states that going from drive to park, it'll get stuck in neutral.
Somewhat associated to this, but not usually tied together, is that the gear selector gauge will go where ever it wants regardless of what gear it's in.

There's a shift interlock actuator under the steering column that might be causing the release issue. Either the part is bad or the mechanism needs to be lubricated. The shift indicator has an adjustment under the column too.
