Does anybody know how to get the running boards off a 96-97 Explorer? Mine's a '97, and I was wondering if it would be very difficult take them off and put them back on from time to time. I like to do a little offroading here and there and they just seem to get in my way at times. If anybody can help me on this I'd appreciate it.

Well, yes you can take them off, but its not a pretty site with nothing there. There is one screw on each end, the 4 L brackets that bolt to the truck with 12 bolts, and 27 (I think) pop clips that go into the side of the truck. It will probably take about 30 min to get them both off without power tools.

TAKE EM OFF! You don't need em anyway. Running Boards are for Conversion Vans:D

i thought i was the "Smokin' X":D

Haha I think you're right man....I had that picture under name as my desktop wallpaper for quite a while! Can't say exactly why I chose that name...it's just the first thing that came to mind.

Anyway, back to the subject. Has anyone out there does this to their own X? I'm just wondering how much of a hassle it'll be to take off and put back on if need be.

Taking my running boards off was the first mod I did to my X. I'm not sure about the newer models, but mine just had screws on both ends, and I guess more across the whole board. I would say that it would not be very hard to take them off and on b/c it is just screws.

Of course mine just pretty much fell off. I don't have my pics here right now, but after getting hung up on a nasty rocky, it bent several ways almost puncturing my tire.
