I was just curious if anyone knows how or if it is possible to run a live wire from the battery to a bolt or something? My reasoning behind this is a security purpose to keep anyone from stealing my lights. :D

Ryan - I'd have to say that I personally don't like this idea :). Mainly because of the potential for a lawsuit, and don't say it'll never happen... but some guy tries to steal your lights, gets electrocuted, you know he'd sue you and he'd win too, not that it would be enough to kill or maim anyone, but I'd still say its a no-no. I'd for something to come in cotact with that wire/bolt and either short out the battery, drain the battery, weld the bolt to the body, etc. If you really want to protect your lights you have a few options. PIAA and Mcguard and a few other companies (PIAA actually uses Mcguard locks) makes light locks, much like lug nut locks, they have a key that you have to have to turn the lock. PIAA also makes a module so that you can hook up those bolts to your car alarm, and if someone tries to steal the lights the car alarm will go off... something to keep in mind!

Outside of the fact that to do this you'd have to somehow isolate the lights completely from all the rest of the vehicle least you create a momentary but spectacular display of sparks and molten metal and, given the correct conditions, an explosion of some magnitude when you "armed" your security system, yes, it could be done.

But, I believe there a number of legal cases which have held the "inventor" of such systems liable when their hatchling lands some would be thief in the hospital or a casket.

Now, don't be heapin' flames on me...this was not **MY** doing. I'm just saying you gotta think twice before doin' something like you're talkin' about. Anyhow, if it didn't kill them (and in most cases it wouldn't of course) the shock might just p*ss 'em off enough that they take it out on your :exp:

All kidding aside, a more conventional alarm system would be my choice.

4Wheelin,
I'd go with Matt on this(who's plugging PIAA:))getting the locks would be the best deterant and a motion alarm would stop most from messing with it once it went off. A side note, if you haven't gotten with your insurance company, I'd suggest you ask them about coverage on your accessories.(No, I don't sell insurance). I have everything I have added filed with the insurance company, mostly in case of an accident or theft. That way they have no beef with replacing anything. Later.

it's not that I'm plugging PIAA, its that they seem to be the only company interested in securing their lights (probably because all other light companies see theres as replaceable, and they are cheap enough that spending $30 on locks would be stupid, since a new set of lights would cost $40). I guess if your buying a set of PIAA 90s at $450 or whatever they are, you'd be more concerned about them being stolen then your $50 hellas.

Matt,
I was just yanking your chain about the plug. I know mine are not as good or as expensive as the ones you run. (One of your pet-peaves, starting a sentence with but)BUT, I'd rather they not mess with mine anyway and have to go through the hassles involved with insurance company, body damage,..etc..I'm glad that PIAA is looking out for the customer by creating lock for their lights.(Hella just don't care:( ).Later.

After reading all this I think I'll skip on the live wire. If I put all my accesories under my insurance than is it going to go up? because if not than thats a real good idea.

With all the stuff I have added, mine has only gone up $7.00/year. It is really hard to say if your will go up or stay the same, depends on many factors. To me the small extra is worth it. If I were in a wreck and the brush guard was smashed, there go my lights and brushguard. Not covered by my insurance( I asked). A small fee and now they are. I also have a folder at home with all the reciepts and maintenance done as well as photos to back up what was done. Probably overkill on my part, but I like to be prepared. It all boils down to if you think it's worth it.
