I have a 91 and when I'm off road climbing a hill it wants to run hot and when i stop an idle it goes back down but driving on the road it does fine. I've changed out the thermostat already. Does anyone have any solutions for me? Thanks, chico

I am having issues on overheating on mine also. I plan on either replacing the fan/clutch assembly or putting in an electric soon. I think the fan is going bad on mine as I run hot slow towing a popup, but highway speeds I run good. I also have noticed I can run hot intermitantly in same conditions of city driving while not towing (thats why I think clutch is going bad)

I`d say replace the clutch, especially if it`s the stock one, and if you have AC, pull the rad right out and make sure it isn`t dirty, mine was filthy with leaves and mud even though I tried spraying the hose in there to loosen anything that might get caught in there.
I had the same symptoms and haven`t overheated since replacing the fan clutch, BUT the weather was cooling down at the same time, so it`s hard to say.. (it did still run hot after getting the leaves and mud out, AND installing a new rad)

ps, you need a special wrench for that fan clutch, Ford will gladly over charge you for one! :D

I would also suggest a possible bad fan clutch. If you don't want to be overcharged by Ford for the wrench, go to a place like Autozone that has a tool loan program. That ford fan clutch wrench is a common item at such places.

Thanks guys...I'm going totry all of it. I am flushing all of my cooling system also and going to run a semi synthetic oil and i also have a oil cooler. Hopefully something will change. Thanks again, chico
