I have terrible news folks..
This is pathetic..
My 1987 plymouth voyager 3.3 V6 beat me and my friend's 1992 eddie bauer 4-door explorer.
here's the deal.

We decided to test the performance of his stock 92, so we pitted it against my old pimp van (daily driver).

---- "The Van" as we call it, has 160,000 miles. No AC, damaged muffle, grotesquely bent front left fender (i get tire rub!)

---- "Blue boy" (explorer) has 150,000. mint condition. "lady driven" (of course, that was 140,000 miles before he bought it.)

We went to a 2 mile stretch of straight road, got side by side, and began to accelerate. Using granny gears, The Van rattled to 45 or so in about 4 seconds... Blue Boy wasn't as lucky.. four seconds later he's still 1/2 mile behind me... and i'm distancing....

I was at 105

105?

Murk:

Somebody's completely missing the point here, IMHO! Explorers aren't Hi-po race cars, they're slow, lumbering, TRUCKS. Properly and thoughtfully equipped, modified and skillfully driven, they very slowly go virtually anywhere! In the right hands, once the Explorer caught the van, it very likely could have crawled right up and over it! That's what it's really all about :D

Ray's got it. :) The Explorer is just not meant to be fast! Otherwise it would come with a decent engine. Well the new 2002's should be a tad bit better. At least the V8 should be but the V6 is not a race engine. :)

Yeah, but it got beat by a VAN... :D

:D But seriously, we have a 94 Dodge Caravan SE, 3.0L V-6, mint condition, and it is pretty....peppy. It can go pretty fast, but it front wheel drive and weighs probably half of what our Explorer weighs. Remember, you pulling 2 or more tons with a small V-6. You might not get the van in acceleration, but once you got rolling you could easily overtake it I'd say. But for Explorers being so bulky and with ours having a V6, I think it performs pretty good.

My wife's ONLY two complaints about the Explorer.
(1) She can't take it around corners at 80 mph, and
(2) The acceleration. When she stomps on it she wants to hear screaming tires and be pinned to the seat like her Chrysler.

Well, tell the wife to cough up the money for you to make it compliable with her wishes.

All True.

Yeah guys....
I know that the good ol' Explorer ain't no race car!
Heck, it ain't even a CAR!
:D
However, to a couple of college kids, the fact that "The Van" beat the obviously "cooler" explorer was an ego knock. I was dissapointed! I had hoped that his explorer would beat me, cause it cost him considerably more than my Van did me! (about $5,100 for explorer, about $800 for van.)

But Ray, you're right; Explorers " very slowly go virtually anywhere!"

BTW,
I'm working on a 302 for my 94'... now i have more incentive to get it done!

If it makes anyone feel any better, I beat my friend's 91 Accord in my 92, and that was before I did the intake and exhaust.

peace

Mike

Sure so our Explorer aren't fast, but hey if you want to feel better about it, just wait until rush hour traffic, and find some nice little sportscar that is boxed in by slower vehicles and proceed to speed by him.

I did this to a Viper about a month ago. I sped by him, than slowed down then sped by him again. I could tell he got frustrated that he couldn't go faster because he took his turn at a quite excessive speed.

On a side note, I think I need a van so I can also go 105mph :)

Fast explorer!!

i know explorers are trucks, but i too like to be able to race someone at a light. i think im done with the outside, save an upcoming lift in the future. now im working on the engine. im dong as much as i can to a lease, filtercharger, bosch +4 plugs, etc, and i think it goes pretty fast. i raced my friend in his stock mustang (v6) and beat him....... barely. i pulled ahead verrrrrry slowly, it still feels good though, knowing you have a cool ride that can stick up for itself at the light :)

Re: Re: Fast explorer!!

What does that license plate say? Mustang Eater?

LOL, i wish that would fit on a license plate.. mine says CATCH. what that means? depends who's asking.......

So what if Explorer is slower? Try taking that Van off-road, rock climbing or mud racing. Are you sure you want to do it?

Later,

"Faster Explorer"

Dont know if i want to take my pretty much stock explorer rock climbing. But then u can say with some modification it is a very capable offroader, but what is the advantage of a stock explorer? It is heavy with a v6, there fore slow and doesnt handle as well. Why couldnt ford put a 5.0 in here? A stock van with all wheel drive will go pretty far...i've seen em on the beach. So where is the advantage of having an explorer?

would you rather drive up in a minivan or an Explorer??????? Not really a hard question if you ask me!

Jus ask "Big Dave" what kind of trails you go tackle in a stocker. I don't think you'd want to do it in your Van. Anybody else?
As far as me my first escapade was in a stocker and I don't think I performed that bad.

Later,

PS. Check Attica treads in "Serious Explorations" forum for pix of stockers on the trail.

Ok!

My dear friends,
My point was NOT that "The Van" is cooler, bigger, badder, heavier, versitile-er, or prettier than the explorer!!!!!
It definately is not!
HOWEVER!
it is comparably faster than a stock explorer. That is my point!
And Gimp:
A van is a great daily driver, but its not what I use to "pimp." For that i have my slick '97 f-150 extnd cab.
(its not too slow, but it doesn't get as good gas mileage as the Van.)

No prob

Yeah,
the parking crisis is getting worse and worse; however!
Strange as it may seem, no-one has ever dented, scratched, dinged, or in any other way damaged my Van!
I can park beside a 1983 buick with one headlight and 1/2 a rear bumper and never have a problem!
I have even harbored a secret desire to come back from the bank and see my Van with a horrendous key mark, but to no avail. Other than the infamous Fender Dent (the one that causes tire rub) which was caused by a large Econoline handicapped personel carrier, the body has no defects!
:P
Maybe reverse phychology will work for you guys with the sweeter rides!

Over and out!
