Does anybody have one of those on and where did you purchase? I have seen some with shovel attachement and spare tire. Is this stuff really worth investing into?

I have one but I only use it when I hit the trails. The Highlift Jack mount and shovel mount on my rack were sold separately as well as the light mounts. I like to have it when I go on the trail cause I can put my spare tire and a few other things up top and still have a bit of room for another passenger and maybe a cooler or what not in the back seat. The only thing that you have to watch out for is that the more you put up there the more top heavey your rig is going to get. I have to be really carfull when I am out on the trail. I guess it would all depend on what you really want to use it for. Mine work great for campine. I kinda modified it so half of the rack is a sealed water proof box. but anyway it has a lot of uses and a few draw backs, all depends on what you want to use it for. Hope that helps/ makes sence.....It's a bit to eairly in the morning Dead Link Removed

Andre,
I too have the Safari Roof Rack that was purchased through Explorer Express. I will admit, they have excellent customer service and fairly fast shipping. Also, they may seem a little high on some things, but their price for the Safari Roof Rack was the best that I could find anywhere.
As for the rack itself, I love it. Granted, I travel off-road quite a bit and use it alot then. I also use it to haul stuff around town though. It does had quite a bit of height to the top of the explorer, but it doesn't bother me too much.
Hope this helps, take care and happy exploring!

Hi Andre,
I use a roof rack made by con-ferr here in california.
It slides into the track of your explorer`s roof.
you can get add-ons foe shovle, lights, jack and so on.
it`s well built, hauls a good load and is bullet proof. had it on my off-road trips for the last 5 years.
don`t know the brand you guys are talking about, but if you would like some info on the con-ferr let me know.

I'm interested. Have any pics or are they on the web? Thanks for any info in advance.
I won't ask why you'd need a bullet proof rack though. Dead Link Removed If it's that dangerous, better have the windows done too. heh

Let us know!!!! I'd be interested cause others are aluminium.

Guys -

Try http://www.con-ferr.com and http://www.garvin-industries.com

I have the Con-Ferr rack and agree with Ewald - - they are stout! You will have to install flooring however; either plywood, steel (my recommendation) or aluminum.

You can also see theCon-Ferr racks in the multi-page 4WD Wholesalers ads in most 4x4 mags.

I have a Garvin Industries Wilderness rack, and I believe the roof would crush to the frame before it would bend. It's VERY stout. Pretty heavy though, weighs about 60 lbs. Pretty pricey, too, some of their racks are $400+ (I got mine used). I guess it's just a personal preference. I use mine to haul with attachments to haul mtn. bikes, kayaks, canoes, coolers & luggage, etc. They also have some really neat attachments for a high-lift jack and shovel.

I would check into a custom rack. Whether you could put one toghether yourself, have a friend that could do it, or possibly even a local custom truck shop that could make one, I think it is worth pricing. Having a shop do probably wont save you any money, but if you or a friend could do it I'm sure materials wouldn't cost 400+ like the Garvin rack.

Just a thought.

I just bought the Garvin Roof Rack for my '93. Buuut.... I haven't got it yet. I ordered it about a week ago and it hasn't come in yet. Anyway I spent $375 on mine with the flooring kit and the spare tire carrier. I did alot of research before i bought mine and the Garvin seemed to be the one with the most options for the money. You can check out a picture at www.garvin-industries.com They have a few pics of it on an explorer. Enjoy!

I also have the Surco Safari Rack. It is 50"x60". All I have on it are four Hella 500's and my spare tire. It looks really good though. It is made of aluminum, so it can only support about 100 lbs, and the tire almost weighs that much. But, if you don't use it for much else, it is great because it's cheaper and doesn't weight down your car as much. Plus, it doesn't rust.

I agree with Dignan and his idea of a custom rack. It can be built to your needs and if you have a friend with a welder and some know how you can make a great looking rack. I made my own safari rack for the low cost of a few cans of spray paint and welding supplies. (I had some scrap metal that was perfect for the rack). I made my high lift jack mount as well as a shovel and axe mount and mounts for foward and backward facing lights and mount for my CB antenna. But if you cant go this route I suggest the Garvin wilderness rack.

I'm looking for a steel aftermarket roof rack that sits low (close to the roof). Any recommendations?

Sorry guys that it took so long to get back to you all, have been racing down in Baja Mex.
Back to the con -ferr rack, I see that a lot has been answerd on this subject.
Off-Road Warehouse here in the San Diego area sells it for 225.00 +tax.
If you have an factory rack you would use the existing track and just slide the rack in. get your self some plywood fit it to size and you are ready. I`v just carried 2 tires, 35`s, big jack, 15gal.gas Plus a tool and pit box, which is a heck of a load and that in the dirt not on highway- good stuff....`nuf said! call them at 858)565-7792 if you like the price .Ask for Wally, tell him about the Explorer forum and you are good to go. Also there is the website www.offroadwarehouse.com

i have the surco aluminum safari rack as well. i had a local welder mount a spare tire carrier as well as tabs for my four daylighters. i love the rack however, i noticed that i get 1 or 2 mpg better without the tire on top, so i recommend using it for mostly off road purposes.
