What is the best time of year to do the San Juan Loop in Colorado. I know it is closed until around June. I want to go to Cinnamon Pass, Engineer Pass, Ophir Pass, and the ghost towns in the area as well as the mine.
There is pictures and more info in the March 4 Wheel Drive & Sport Ute magazine. One thing the article fails to mention is when the best time to go would be.
Thanks for your help

Brian,
I have been on all these routes. Mostly dirt biking several years ago. I'm looking forward to getting my Explorer in shape for a few excursions this summer.
As far as when to go, I'd say shoot for July to mid-August. That would come closest to being sure the snow slide areas have receded to allow passage.
Another excellent route is Imogene Pass, from Ouray to Telluride. 13,250 at the summit and lots of knarly sliderock switchbacks getting there.
I will try to round up a couple links to this area ...
