Long time lurker, just joined because this site has so much to offer!
Today, while I had the wheel off on the drivers side of my 96' Ranger, I noticed that there was a part snapped in half. I've attached some pictures of said part below; can anyone tell me what this part is, what it does, etc? (Click on images for larger view) Thanks!

Huh, got me stumped. It looks a lot like a shock, but it couldn't be based on where it's mounted.
It looks like the upper end is somehow connected to the engine. Is this the case? If so, it could be a torque strut, or something like that. Something to limit or cushion the "twist" of the motor under load?

...You have a 4.0 correct???

...Those are found only on 4.0's and they are a shock that helps with engine vibration dampening...Ford added those from the factory, and they are only on one side...The drivers side...

..I also see your SPV hanging and I would caution you to verify the wires can not get cut on the battery tray...;)

Yup, what ^these guys^ said. It's a mini-shock from engine to frame.
My 93 has one, too.
But why would it snap in half??? Maybe check your motor mounts?

Thanks for the replies. What would SPV stand for by chance? While my brother is the mechanic of the family, I know enough to change my oil, rotate the tires, and tinker a bit, but I'm not familiar with terminology. Now, ask me something about a computer, and I'll write you a novel!

On a side note, and I guess I could start a new thread for this, but the reason I had the tire off in the first place was that I was cleaning the automatic hubs. The other day I was stuck, and had the 4 wheel drive engaged. I've had the truck for about 3 months, and have been using four wheel drive for the last 2 months on the roads just fine. While stuck, I tried "rocking" the truck back and forth to get myself out, an then I tried to go forward, and the truck started "shuddering" and I could really feel it underneath the drivers side; truck wouldn't move at all, but sort of lurched ahead a little at a time. It almost seemed like something was binding by the wheels/brakes. Did a little research, and found out that cleaning the hubs might help. So, I took them off and they were pretty caked with grease, so I cleaned them up nice and put them back on (after applying a little, new grease, of course), and now there is no more noticeable shuddering, however when I accelerate from a dead stop, there is a feeling almost like there is something slipping or trying to catch by the wheels, and when I hit 25-30 MPH, it finally grabs and I can feel the truck "stiffen" and feel that the four wheel drive is working. If I slow down to a stop, say at a stop light, and then go, same story. Any ideas on what that could be? Easy answer is the hubs, so unless there are any other ideas, I'll be bidding on a pair of the rebuilt hubs from "that guy" on Ebay (I know most will say go with manual hubs, but with my Ranger at 130k, I would think a "new" set of hubs would outlast the truck). Thanks for the help, guys!

...SPV is Solenoid Purge Valve...;)

...It is the item in your picture on the left, hanging down behind the inner fender...It has 2 wires and while making turns, it will scrape the wires on the battery tray and short...

...There are some auto hubs for sale in the classified section here too...

I forgot to add, that when I put everything back together, the passenger side hub fit snugly up against the whole shaft and assembly, however on the drivers side, it had a noticeable gap, where the other side was snug. Pushing on it hard sealed it up, but it seemed there was pressure coming from the assembly, and once let go, the hub came back out enough to see the gap again. Could something be loose there that is causing the hub to not make contact all the way? Everything fit back together fine, and I figured tightening the lug nuts would snug it up, but I could be wrong.

i had that problem once and all you have to do is take the hub off and move it to the next lug. repeat untill fits snug

I'll try it, but I'm pretty sure mine sits a little closer than what you describe.

Need a part#/source for that motor "shock"

Yup, what ^these guys^ said. It's a mini-shock from engine to frame.

Sorry to bring up an old thread (and hijak too, kinda), but anyway:

I just bought a '93 Ranger 4.0L/5psd/4x4 to fix and sell. It has one of these "shocks" on the motor. I would like to replace it, but I can't find a listing/part# for it at any of the usual stores or Rock. Can anybody help?

If it's an OEM Ford part it should have a part number on the side,

Yeah.... it doesn't look much better than the one in the OP's pic. I think any OEM Part#'s are long gone, sacrificed to the rust gods. Besides, I was hoping for an aftermarket part#, but thanks anyway.

Choose whatever brand of shocks you like, and it'll most likely be listed as a steering stablizer like the rear 3rd shock..

I was actually just going to post again about where to find one. Please post a link if you find one online. It's going to be a PITA to get mine off, that's for sure; she's rusted on there good.

Thanks for the effort, but definitely not what I was looking for. $50 is way too much. As I said, I bought this thing to clean it up, fix what's broken, and flip it. I was looking for a $15-$20 monroe/gabriel/etc... parts store piece. If I was keeping it, maybe.

Has anybody ACTUALLY bought a parts-store type replacment for this part? Can you tell me where you got it, the brand, part#, etc...?

$50 is way too much.
That's exactly what I thought of when I saw that. $50 for a machined piece of pipe with threading on the top? No thanks - I can have the younger guys in shop class at the local high school make a crude, but functional version of the same thing for free.

I would just run without one. I bet you'd be fine.

...Just for clarification, that is listed as a "FORD ranger 4.0 OHV explorer Mazda engine link shock" and not a solid piece of pipe..

...You could also contact our Forum Shock vendor as well as our other vendors to see what they have for replacement...;)
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213238

...I as well as others will anxiously be watching this to see what you find as a replacement as this part does not come up to often but I know what it's like to find what should be a common replacement part...

and not a solid piece of pipe..
From the pictures and description stating "does not allow movement" one would assume it is similar to a pipe, no?
