So today I scored this beauty from a couple at a garage sale... FOR $30!

I offered more because I felt I was scamming them, but they said no.

So far it works great for pulling DTC codes, which alone would cover the $30 dollars, but who is the best custom tuner for 2nd Gens?

locked?

I believe when the programmer is used to install a custom tune in a specific vehicle it is locked to that vehicle until the stock tune is restored. You may be able to use it as a scanner but not as a programmer if it is still locked to another vehicle. Also, only five different vehicles can be programmed before the program function is locked.

And if it is locked it will cost $150-200 to have it unlocked.

Ditto. The SCT 3000 tuner is VIN locked to a specific vehicle.
A very slight chance you will have the same PCM code as the original owner.
Best bet is to contact an SCT tuner for info. (Henson or Torrie @ Unleashed)

I will say James Henson from hensonperformance.com. You really can't go wrong as he does have the fastest explorer in the 1/4 and probably more knowledge on remote tuning.

Henson all the way.

For that cheap, it's probably stolen. They run $300+ new.

its Unlocked

Hmm... never thought about it being stolen... Is there any way to check on that other then SCT? I called SCT yesterday and everything checked out on it, they said I was the first person to register it and the firmware/tunes are really really out of date. When it starts up, it says 'Unlocked - Unlocks Left: 5', does that mean it is good?

You may have gotten the best SCT deal ever, even if it was "warm to the touch". (Hot)
Brand new tuners start with 5 "unlocks", this means a tune was never used or loaded.
Get back in touch with SCT and have them "remotely" check and update the software.
You will probably have to purchase new tunes at around $50 each. You scored, big time. GL

stay away from bamachips there customer service is horrible there phone number doesnt even work

James Henson all the way!!!

I've got that same SCT tuner for mine 'cause it's the only one I could find that will work on the OHV and is programible to additional engine mods (cam, intake etc.) and can reprogram your auto tranny shift points. Havent used it on the EX yet (still in 500 peices in my garage) but have been running it in my '02 F-150 on the fuel econamy tune (87 Octane) for 2yrs now and am getting about 4mpg (est.) better milage

Did you get the CD-ROM with it? That has a program on it that you can download updates for free (I was told) from SCT's website (custom tunes will cost). Since yours is unlocked and not reported as stolen to SCT, why bother buying a different one? You cant get any better bang for your buck that a $30 investment.

Thats a good deal. I bought mine brand new for $399. I take my mustang to Fastlanemotorsports in Benson, NC. If I were to do any perfomance upgrades to my explorer it would take it to the same place as my mustang.

Nice find. Im getting ready to purchase from Henson Performance. A few bucks more than you paid though.
