I am going to be soon purchasing a mercury mountaineer 2002 or up
I want to install a second alternator and was wondering if anyone on here has done this and on what engine?
I'm not sure if I should go with a V6 or 8, was wondering if there is room under the hood for a second alternator for the v6 or 8?

I'm new on here and once I get my suv i'll probably be on here all the time
Any help you could throw my way would be greatly appreciated.
Matt

i don't think its possible on the 4.6 or the 4.0, i haven't heard of anyone doing one, not saying its not impossible.

i would recommend just upgrading the alternator, slapping an overdrive pulley on it and get a deep cycle optima battery....and you can run a lot of stuff off that.

well to go into a little more detail of why i am wanting to do 2 alternators.
First my planned stereo setup
1 kinetik hc2400 under the hood,
4 runs of 1/0 gague wire back to 4 or more kinetik hc 2400's
2 memphis mcd4kw
1 memphise mca5004
so thats about 9000 watts with about 1100 amp current draw

Got some ideas from some people just seing if they will actually work for the alternator setup.
2 stock 130 amp alternators wired in paralled.
Why: there cheap, if one goes I still have another one to drive the car.
don't have to pay allot of monet to get it repaired if it goes bad, or worry about the alternator overheating because the guy building it did it wrong.

What I have to do is first figure out if it's possible to fit it on the engine.
second is make a bracket to mount it and find the right size belt.
third I would figure how to wire the sensor wires.

Anyone out ther mount 2 alternators onto one of their Suv's?

you could do it. you'd have to fab the bracket and install it on the drivers side but it should work.. just a question of $$$, which doesnt seem to be an issue

If you end up wanting to do this I have my 130 amp alternator from my 03 V8 Explorer for sale. It only has roughly 6,500 miles on it and obviously in perfect condition. PM me if interested.
