I would like input from you folks as to recommendations and the sequence ( with degree of difficulty )of performance modifications to a V6 SOHC Explorer.
Thanks in advance....

well

1. K&N air filter
2. Replace K&N filter with K&N filtercharger kit
3. Aftermarket Exhaust
4. Replace 2 month old aftermarket exhaust with new stainless steel quieter exhaust sice you now have a ringing in your ears from driving on the highway for too long
5. New spark plugs and wires (first tune-up in 150,000 miles)
6. Replace poor quality plugs and wires with better super ultra platinum ones and real wires this time (your second tune-up and only 150,500 miles)
7. Larger mass air flow sensor (MAF)
8. Larger throttle body
9. custom intake tube from PVC pipe
10. Headers
11. New O2 sensors (that you wish you had replaced while doing the headers) and fuel pump to fix constant "check engine" light
12. New 20 million volt super advanced electronic ignition system cuz the wires and plugs arent cool enough by themselves anymore
13. Supercharger/Turbocharger
14. New Exhaust for turbocharger and because that great stainless unit is now too restrictive and quiet
15. Rip heads off and get valve job and everything polished
16. Rip everythin apart and replace with lihter weight and race quality parts you found out will barely fit
17. Get sick of 4.0L and scrap the whole @$#!$ thing for a new 302 V8

:D

Re: well

This was intended as a serious question; I expected, at least hoped for a serious answer.

Well, he was sort of right. If you want mods just for your engine, I would do the following:

1.K&N filter w/drilled airbox or KKM induction filter
2.Cat back exhaust system
3.high performance spark plug wires and plugs
4.a chip if you are okay with buying premium gas
5.headders
6. bigger MAF (mass air flow) sensor
7. throttle body spacer

These are the things I would do to boost power and performance. The order depends on how much cash you have to spend. The hardest mod to do yourself would be the headders and then changing the spark plugs. Everything else is pretty simple.

Welcome to the site!

Actually, that was all sound advice. Only problem is that some of those mods arent' available for the SOHC engine yet. Anime know's what he's talking about. The fact that he has a sense of humor about it just illustrates how well he understands the buildup bug. :D

Please explain the performance gain with this mod. Is there also a milage gain?

>>3.high performance spark plug wires and plugs<<

Basically the idea behind plugs and wires is to get a better spark. I'm not sure you'd see a noticeable difference, but the theory is that the better your plugs, the better the combustion, meanign better effieciency and slightly more power.
