1995 ford explorer 4 door
:us:I have a 1995 Ford Explorer, in and out of problems for the past few years and now I think I am hitting the end of its life. I believe my Clutch or tranny is going out along with the catalytic converter..maybe. Im not too sure though thats why i am seeking advice on here to anyone who may possibly be able to help me. When I am in ANY gear....well for example first gear, I start the car, let off the clutch and press the gas like a normal manual driver and I get no power....it just revs and moves a little and it takes forever to get to normal driving speeds....now I notice this smell which makes me believe its the clutch...smells like burning hionestly, burning fluids everyone probly knows the smell, anyway I have also thought its the catalytic converter, not too sure AND on TOP of all this all of a sudden all that will blow out of my vents is hot air.....I cannot even get fan air out of it or outside air its all hot like its stuck on the heat position or something AND i discovered my air conditioning clutch got knocked loose and it was just laying on top of a bar in my engine and luckily I recovered it but I am just having clutch nightmares...anyone have any advice?

It sounds like you need a clutch, a AC compressor, and have a blend door problem. Those threes are easy fixes that you can do yourself.:D Run a search for them one at at a time and you will be Mississippi pimpin' in no time.

with the smell you describe its likely time for a clutch

Check your clutch fluid as well, its possible your slave cylinder is leaking brake fluid onto your clutch and causing problems

sure! Clutch can be had for about $90, slave cyl and TO bearing about another $100, flywheel resurface is about $30, new pilot bearing is about $15

The labor is what kills ya, they get $400-800 to do the clutch
I personally did it myself, about 6 times. First time took 3 days, by the 6th one it was taking me about 6-8 hours by myself with hand tools.
then I converted to an automatic and never looked back!
Research is your friend, even if you are paying to have it done, you should be informed so you know what clutch brand/type you want and what you are paying for

Welcome To The Forum! If its slipping and smelling its deff. time for a new clutch :)

:Dthank you guys for the help, I really appriciate it! now I know what I should be looking for, so again thats for the advice!

and I WISH i had the expertise of you guys to know how to change this myself...unfortunatly ill have to get it done at a place or ill destroy my car haha

Ha, I've never swapped out a clutch without pulling the whole motor, so I'd imagine It'd take me a good long while to do it.

I didnt know a thing about doing a clutch 14 years ago when I needed one... I had a friend who knew a bit and was willing to help so we tackled it ourselves.

14 years later I could do one in my sleep, you gotta start somewhere :)

I saved big $$$ over the years, like 14 years of car payments big $$$, instead I bought tools and asked questions here :)

Might be a beginning to a whole new me haha

ill be posting on here more often

thanks guys

You should create an explorer registry with pics of your truck, let everyone know who ya are. Good luck with your truck.
