Serpentine belt replacement.

Hello all!

Just replaced my serpentine belt on my 93 ranger as it was getting a few cracks in it. It might have been the original. The point is, when I bought the belt, the fellow at the parts house lent me a belt tensioner release tool.

It consists of a long piece of flatiron with a handle, as well as assorted sockets and an extension which allows you to set and maintain an angle, in case you have to go around something to get to your tensioner. The business end has a 3/8 drive stud. You just stick the stud into the female receiver on the front of the tensioner, pull to the left, and presto, no tension!

Got the job done in about 10 minutes.

Worth asking for and even renting if you are going to do this job.

I don't recall the brand, perhaps it was Am-Pro. I put down a deposit and got it all back when I brought the tool back to Advance Auto.
 






I hope the tool didn't cost too much. I replaced my serpentine belt just a couple weeks ago. I loosened the alternator bolts and the things went on like a breeze, I just used a regular socket and ratchet and had no problems. OH well, whatever makes the job easier- since car manufactuors don't think about maintence when they build them.... grr
 






A 1/2" breaker bar and socket (I forget which size) are all that is needed. Rotate the tensioner pulley to release pressure on the belt (against the spring), swap belts, release the tensioner pulley.

That's it!
 






I didn't have to pay for it, just put down a deposit, and got it back in full when I returned the tool. I see how a ratchet or breaker bar would do the job as well.
