My buddies X got rejected for inspection due to the Serpentine Belt. First off, does it sound weird to anyone that he couldn't pass inspection because of a belt? And second, how hard is it to replace? Tried doing a search but Rick must be working on it right now...

Inspection sticker rejection for a belt seems odd - but the rules in Virginia might have different requirements than Mass. The belt is easy. I had Valvoline Instant Oil Change do it for short money and 10 minutes during an oil change one lunch hour recently. It was very obvious it needed it - cracks on the backside of the belt.

There should be a diagram under the hood that shows the path of the belt. Just a matter of loosening the tensioner, removing and replacing the belt in the right path.

Good. I was hoping that's what was involved. Just wanted to make sure there was no hidden suprises along the way like taking the fan off or something like that.

Helpful hint..
There is a locking tab on the backside of the tensioner. This allows you to lock the tensiorer in the install position so the belt is 100% loose. You can then use both hands to remove and install the new belt. After the new belt is in position just put the wrench on the tensioner and pull some more and the lock will be released. I discoved this little trick on my second belt install... needless to say my first install was interesting.

get a goodyear gatorback serpentine. they rule ;)

Great! Thanks for the help guys!
