Alright guys don't flame me, i am helping a friend replace their serpentine belt on their 2003 Ford Explorer V8. I need to know where the tensioner pulley is, the diagram under the hood just shows the belt layout and doesn't identify which is the tensioner pulley. Also what is required because i have read 2 things on this forum, that all you need is a 1/2" breaker bar and there is a square hole for it to fit into, or that you need a 13mm socket, which is it? Thank you for your help, a pic or diagram would be great.

The square on the housing should be for the breaker to fit into, so you can compress the tensioner and get the serpentine belt off. The 13mm is probably to remove the bolts holding it on. (I don't know if they're 13mm for sure though)

I don't have a gen III anymore, so I can't give you exact placement, but it should look like this: (The breaker bar fits into that little square so you can work it with the bar)

i did mine on my 04 v8. thought them bolts were 10mm.

I had a loud pulley. loosened tension on belt(had someone hold the wrench) and spun the pulleys til i found the bad one.

Ford wanted 80$ for the tensioner/pulley. Advance auto wanted 17$ for just the pulley. So i just replaced the pulley as no way the tensioner would be bad with 45k miles./ felt strong < allthough it is possiable, my wter pump puked at 25,000 miles. true story!.

good luck.

I had a hell of a time, i left the fan on and the belt routing kicked my a$$ . But i got it.

forgot to add :

the tensioner is on the passenger side of the motor. Or on the left side of the motor if you are looking it.

I kind of read your post wrong. Thought you were replacing your tensioner pulley. Where you are really looking on replacing the belt.

Replacing the belt- i think it would be easier to remove the fan, but it can be done with out removing the fan ( i have read).

when i did my pulley, i just left the belt in there / off the pullies.

I am going to swap my belt here soon. When the shop did my water pump at 25k they goofed up on the belt and got belt peices all over ( long story). so i have had 25k put on since then and some rubber peices are on the pulleys giving me a squeek when my A/C engauges. So i have to replace the belt and clean the pulleys.

good luck and keep us udpated.
