Everything's been running real good on my '02 XLT. All of a sudden as the mileage hit 39,800 tonight the "service engine" light came on.

I didn't detect any problems...all the gauges are normal and I couldn't see anything leaking or smell anything. Does the "service engine" light come on as the vehicle approaches 40,000 miles??

Tour thoughts.

I toured my thoughts, and decided that you need to get your codes read. :D

For why you say that?? LOL Thanks for "touring" your thoughts..probably some sensor or something...

Yea, I have never heard of a CEL light coming on in an Explorer, just for a mileage check. Head by an AutoZone (if you have them) and have them run your OBDII codes. ;)

As stated, pull the code with an OBDII reader/scanner. If you get back P0401 it probably is the DPFE Sensor. Ford extended the warranty on it for another 2 years or 24,000 miles. Email me and I'll send you a copy of the letter. See if the dealer will cover the cost of the part.

Here's a write-up on the DPFE to help.

If it's a different code, post and I'm sure someone can help you with the possible problems/causes.

Is this a CEL or service engine? If an SE ck the obvious, fluid levels

Thanks guys! I'll roll by an AutoZone this afternoon..need to get some parts for an old 70 split bumper Camaro I'm putting together.

Service engine lite

Check engine lite i am familiar with but as said above I am getting the Service Engine Lite. I Was told that this was a Ford Scam to get you in for money work. All my fluid levels are ok. So did i hear wrong on this scam thing? My XLT is running great with no lites on dash indicating a problem. Thanks all. :exp:

Yes, you heard wrong. There is no Check Engine Light, AFAIK. It's the Service Engine Soon on the 3rd gens. There is also a Check Gauge and Check Fuel Cap I believe. From my understanding, if the SES just lights up it's not a serious problem but if you get a blinking SES then it could affect drivability.

As indicated above, I had my SES light come on a little while ago. Read the code and it came back with P0401. After research, the likely problem was the DPFE Sensor. Replaced it and after several start cycles the SES light went off by itself. If you're getting the SES, go get the code read to determine the cause (problem). It's not a scam.

Service engine light on 02

Thanks Mike.

Figured i was getting some bad imput. This forum has always helped. My xlt is still the best wheels on the road. Called Ford and have an appointment this week. Think I might buy a reader to at least know what the codes mean. Thanks again. Ill let you know what the solution Ford comes up with. I still have my extended warantee.

Ken

What yrs models have the SES light? my 03 st do's not have one, least I can't see one my turning the key on

Do you not have any AutoZones up there? They will pull your codes for free. You could also buy a code reader (not scanner) for less than Ford will charge you just to pull the codes. As long as you can get the exact codes, usually the forum here can help you from there, again, for less than Ford will. For an '02, the code(s) should be a fairly generic one.

Ford will get it done for you, but you will pay a lot in the long run. Just throwing you some options. Good Luck.

The Sport Trac's do not have the SES lights. They have: CHECK ENGINE, CHECK FUEL CAP, CHECK GAGE. I was referring to 02+ 4dr's.

Hellow again Mike.

Just got back from autozone and they said they can't read ses codes. I think they are to lazy to read them. I still have an appointment with Ford. I am changing the air filter and fuel filter so i can eliminate something. Will let you know. I think the lite has to be reset so ill wait for ford if the above dont help. Ken

Yeah, too lazy. They can read it as long as they have an OBDII code reader which I'm sure they do. Find another Autozone or go back when better staff is on duty. Or, drive out to Rockaway Beach (Queens) and I'll have my friend pull the code for you on his scanner like he did mine :)

Thanks for the offer Mike. I just bought the Ford book with all the codes and am going to check on a good reader (generic) that will give me the Ford information codes. The Repair manual says the Actron OBD-II diag. tester will do the job. I don't know if it will work on all car makes but hope it does. Ken

The Actron OBDII should be fine. I've gotta get myself one also. Give us an update when you pull the code.

Mike.

Just bought the Actron 9135. Its a great unit. I was going to buy the smaller unit (9125) but what the hell. Went for the more expensive. The code read P01400. My service manual only lists up to P0840. I called Actron and they gave me the Decode. EGR sensor, wiring or valve. Does anyone have the high numbers and decodes. Actron wont send me a list as they say its copyrite infringment. Can anyone help me with the numbers? Thanks All. Ken :(

Never seen the code P01400. Might be internal Ford used code. Based on the the decode, I'm gonna say it's probably the DPFE which is very common. Since you're under warranty have them fix it for free. For those out of warranty, they extended the warranty 2 years/24,000 miles on the DPFE, part#9J460, program#02M01. They should fix it no cost.

Hmmm, now that you have the Actron I know where to go when my buddy is not available and I need a code pulled :)

You sure can. Anytime. If you can get to Staten Island from there. The code is Ford exclusive but Actron gave me the decode. The EGR is about $125 at Pep Boys so Ford here I come. Glad i bought the extended War. Ken :D
