I have several questions about noises that I'm hearing from the front end of my '98 4x4. I just got it a couple of weeks ago so excuse my ignorace and I learn more about it.
1. I've noticed quite a lot of road noise (almost like a hollow moaning sound that changes with speed) which gets more noticeable as I slow down. It is not tire noise. I jacked it up this weekend and realized that front differential and driveshaft are always turning when the car is moving and as I turned my wheels, the movement of the half-axles at the differetial was not completely smooth and I believe the noise is probably originating somewhere in this assembly between the wheel and the driveshaft. I guess my question is: is the road noise that I am hearing normal for explorers or is something getting worn out in my front end.
2. I also noticed while it was up that there is some sort of ring just free floating right behind the wheel on both sides. They look like they could be the remnants of bearing seals or dust shields that have come loose or broken off. Any ideas as to what these are and how I should go about correcting the problem? Could this be related to the noise?
