Dont really know how else to describe it but its not like a rattling more like a constant humm that you can really feel in your feet and up through your body. Really kicks on right at 55 and up. My engine is the 5.0 if that helps. And as a forewarning i got this explorer today for a steal and it does have a few things needing fixed (such as this) so you may see a few from me :D

EDIT: just found this thread, sounds like the same problem i am having. Anyone know how it turned out?

NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) problems generally work like this.....1200 rpm engine pulley issue, 33mph tires/rims, 41mph drivehaft or driveline, 52mph tires/rims. Although it is difficult to pinpoint without an NVH Scan tool, I would check your U-joints and tires. Perhaps you have multiple mismatched tires or a loose U-joint? Keep this in mind.....When you have a BFG 235/65 r15 on the left front and the same numbers on the right rear but it's a Pirelli, the tires can be as much as 1/4 inch different in height brand new from the factory!

now that you say that, the rear tires are the same, and the two front are both different, so a total of 3 sets. (i bought this today, dont give me too much crap for this lol)

I'm a helper not a hater. Maybe they just need a balance as well?

hey thanks alot, yeah i wouldnt doubt they need aligning, it was pulling right. But ive got tons of cash left over from selling my truck, so im taking care of a few problems then moving onto bodylift and 33s so i think i can deal with this for now. hopefully thats all it is. think it would help to put the 2 that are the same on the front?

I would suggest checking the following:

Drive shafts (give them a good shake, if they give even a little new u joints)
Ball joints (lift vehicle and try to move the tire from top to bottom and left to right) if they move look into new ball joints.
Tire rod ends (hopefully outer vs inner)

We all love our ex's however most of us have the same issues.

you also have the 5.0... AWD or 2WD?
front driveshaft installed if AWD? hey, gotta ask, I've seen a thread or 2 where somebody bought an AWD without a front d-shaft.

and don't forget to chock the tires and put in Neutral to check for play in the u-joints :D

its the AWD, and i do have a front driveshaft lol. neither moved at all. but there is significantly more tread on the left front than the right front.

iirc, if there is more than 1/16" difference in actual height on the tires, the viscous coupling is getting worn out.

I believe it was 1/16 from everything I've read, anyway.

wow well theres gotta be at least a 1/4" difference in tread. thats probably it.

haha when i bought my truck (99 v8) it had 3 different tires too, 2 were the same size, the other 2 were different from eachother. and they were all bald except for one! mine did the same thing at about 55 and it was because of a misfire in the 7th cylinder.
