+1. Just put them back in and dab some body colored paint on them. You won't really notice them and in the future, you may have to swap the rack back on for something.

thanx guys gonna take that route. ur input is appreciated

Maybe put some RTV under the head of the screw before you tighten it down all the way - just to make sure its sealed from rain and doesnt start rusting years down the road.

Anyone have bright ideas for getting the rack off?

The very nice owner prior to me stripper the screws putting them back on...
(and forgot to change the oil, tranny fluid/filter, air filter, or do anything for that matter...)

I have an '02 but I haven't looked to see how it is removed yet so I don't know how hard or what is required to get to the screws on the rack. If I was in your shoes, I would acquire a replacement set of screws from a local or online junkyard or from a dealer. Then get a screw extractor kit. Check them out online to see which kit will work best for you. Depending on the condition of your rack and mounting hardware, you may want to consider some kind of spray lube that will help to free the fasteners. If so, you will want one that will not harm your paint or rack.

Hope that helps...

took mine off the other day. it was a little bit of work to clean up the roof, but really like the look of havin them off. put the screws back in and got a bottle of touch up paint and painted them. thanks for the input everyone

I don't know about you, but it seemed like my Ex was a little bit quieter on the highway?

I got the roof bars off, but not the actual rack. I kind of like the way it looks, so I'm not going to worry about it now. With the bars off, it achieves 90% of the goal I was looking for anyways.

BrianDye I seriously hope that the bondo comment was a joke. You probably need to specify that, as I know many people who would actually try that little trick. In all seriousness though if you have access to a welder and know how to use it you can just fill in the holes with a weld bead. That would require some paint too but the look would be worth it.
