How is this done? I know will will have to paint afterward. Was it expensive to shave the door handles? I don't know much about it, but I was at a car show this past weekend and saw it done to a few blazers and it looked really good.

This has ben around for years, take off existing handles, body work, install new interior locking mech. with a kicker that opens door a little when u hit the remote. Before remotes came along we used to install a button somewhere on the body to activate the mechanisim

Are you planning on doing this yourself? I personally would have ashop do this kind of work.

i will definitely have a shop do it, i know that i wouldn't do a good job, and i'd end up hating it.

I would be more concerned with falling out going down the road then I would about not liking the final work. ;)

haha! I wouldn't want to "accidentally" hit the button on the fob or wherever to open the door while in a right hand turn!

I always thought that the handleless cars I see were a bit wierd

I've done this in the past. There are several kits for this. Each one has a different pound rating. The better solenoids have a water resistant sleeve over the front of the actuator, and are rated for the most amount of pulling power. Wire the fuse on an exterior panel. This is a recommended safety precaution just in case the fuse blows, you could still get into your vehicle.

oh wait...... crap! Fail.

My friend Savanna had this done to her Tiburon, it's amazing the quality of it. She has it hooked up to a remote and she also has door poppers installed in the wheel wells so she can hit it herself if the remote dies. I want to say she has some way to get in if her keys are stuck inside and it's locked, like a keypad 'hidden' somewhere she can key her code and it'll unlock. Get it done right at a GOOD shop and you won't be disappointed.

This is good in a warm climate, but in a cold climate, sometimes the doors could freeze, and stick. Even the pressure from a spring loaded popper isn't strong enough to free it if it freezes in place. This type of door is pretty interesting: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209555

I'm new and I'm willing to beat a dead horse so here goes.

Shaving door handles is pretty easy. If you don't have the abillity to weld you may want a shop to do that but installing a solinoid and poper is cake.
Usually the first thing I do to all of my cars is get rid of the handles (I've owned a LOT of vehicles) being that they're the first thig to go and I live in Michigan with snow and ice for most of the year I've never had a problem with anything freezing shut. The fact that moister won't get to the solinoid like it would the handle and lock helps with that.
Now I like to use 35lb solinoids. They're the most reliable and make a good thunk noise when they're activated.
You'll also want to run pos/nev wires to two bolts hidden in a wheelwell, that way if the batt. dies or you leave your keys in the car you can put a nine volt battery up to the two bolts and pop the door open.
Another trick way to do it (instead of remote) is to wire up a magnet switch (instead of a button) and stick it to the inside of the door sheet metal. Then put a magnet on your key ring and when you approach the car the door will pop open for you.
I also use a magnet to start my car (security!) but that's another thread to bring back from the dead I'm sure.

hmmm im tryin to shave my door handles how do i get the door handle off my 97 ford explorer 4 door and how do i program the door popper to my automatic start alarm system to the auxilliary channel

has anyone done this does anyone have pictures to give me a better idea

You have to remove the inside door panel in order to remove the handle. As for the door popper, how many buttons does your remote start system have? You need a spare channel similar to a trunk release. It shouldn't have to be programmed.
