Shift lever has no real distinct positions anymore. Wife was complaining that it was jumping out of park. With the cable disconnected from the transmission it is really sloppy feeling with no distinct detents. I adjusted the cable so park works better but the gear positions fall mid position. Anyone know of any plastic components that fail up in the column? This is the wifes daily driver and don't want to tear the dash apart for days on a fishing trip for the bad component. I can't be the only one this is happening to.

new one on me... rooster comb?

Completely puzzled here. I don't know how the newer ones are hooked up. I have seen the combs get unhooked from stuff inside the pan in older ones. I even saw a bolt back out of the valve body (olds) and it would lose one gear at a time as it worked out. Have you checked the cable right at the trans? Try unhooking it and shift by hand (without it running-dont want to get hurt). That would tell you for sure if it was in the cable.

Perhaps I didnt make it clear. The transmission detents are fine, the problem is in whatever detent mech is in the column (and possibly the shift cable if that wears internally to add slop).
