I was wondering if I should change the shift points on my X because I can't get it over 71 or 72 mph without it downshifting back a gear. If i do 75 mph, I'll have to ease off the pedal a bit for it to go in to overdrive, if I give it gas slowly I'll get to 75 mph but eventually downshift back into 3rd. At 71 or 72 mph the rpms are about 2400-2450 (overdrive), and at 75 mph the rpms are 3000+ (3rd gear) Should I change the shift points or are they ok? How can I change them?

you cannot change the shift points without a performance chip

you dont need to change them, theat is the regular or correct rpm range for those speeds

You got something wrong somewhere. You should be able to go from 40 to 100 in overdrive without it downshifting to 3rd.
It could be the engine or trans., I dont know. But I do know that what you got isnt right.
I'd start w/the trans. filter change & spark plugs & wires change & see what happens. You probably need those things anyway.

It is probably due to the 3.73s you still have in there and the extremely heavy and fairly tall 33" BFGs you have on there. My '97 came stock with 4.10s and 30" tires. When I went up to 33"s I couldn't stand the loss in performance and ended up going with 4.56s to put the RPMs back in their proper range. For you to gain back your lost power, you will need to go to 4.56s as well. Your RPMs are not right for the speeds you are driving. Look at your door sticker and you'll see that your Explorer came stock with 235 75R15 tires (about 29" tall). You now have 33" tires on there. They are 14% taller than stock. This means that your RPMs are 14% lower than they were when everything was stock at all speeds. For instance if your engine used to turn 2200 RPM at 70 MPH, you are now turning 1933. Add in the extra weight from the tires and it's no wonder your Ex is struggling.
