I was driving down the Highway and my check engine light came on and it started shifting funny. When i got home i whipped out the ole' Snap on Scan Master OBDII scanner and it came up as the Shift Solenoid "B".

Has any one ever had it replaced? If so who did the repair and what was the cost?

It seem not to be shifting in to 3rd gear or OD.
The X only has 39k on it.

Any light shined on this subject would be appreciated.

Thanx,
CHRIS

It isn't difficult to replace once you get the pan off. I'm not sure which one of these solenoids is B, but here are the solenoids in my '97 5-speed.

I'm not sure whether you have the 4r70w or the 5r55e trans.

I looked in the Ford manual; if you have the 4r70w, then your symptoms point to SS2 (shift solenoid 2). I'm not sure which one it is for the 5r55e, but I can go back and look again.

The Ford manual doesn't identify any of the solenoids by letters (i.e. "B") They are identified by numbers (i.e. SS1, SS2, etc.) The "B" must be due to your scanner program. It seems likely that solenoid B = SS2 in Ford terminology.

Nice picture, Robert. Did you drop the pan just now so you could show him the solenoids? That's dedication! ;)

Hey, I do what I have to to help :D

The last time I changed my filter I grabbed my camera and started taking pictures. Having a digital camera I find myself taking pictures of anything I work on now just in case I want to look at it later.

My AutoXray scanner also refers to my shift solenoids as A, B, & C. I think that is the generic referrence. Ford just changed their designation to be different. I would also think that SS2 would be B.

That picture is a good one because you can compare to the drawings in the manual and it becomes more clear. I was trying to figure out what they were talking about when removing the electrical harness, and that picture shows it much better.
