SHifter locked on a Auto Tranny

HEy i would like to know what is the problem that my car starts fine but when i go to put it in drive the shifter does not move it all . It stays on park no matter how hard i try. Can anyone help?​

Welcome to this forum! I suspect that it might be a problem with the safety interlock which disengages when you step on the brake pedal.

There's also a fuse associated with that.

Hi just a thought

I would try searching the linkage for a bind point or checking the neutral safety switch and brake safety interlock before attempting something desperate. GL on resolution and let us know what resolves the issue when you find out what it was. Oh and just a thought if shifter on steering wheel not floor... check the steering wheel lock is not bound up.

I'll have to check my owners manual, but I'm pretty sure you can disable the lock with a switch on the steering column. I'm at work now so I'll check when I get home and post what I find. Maybe some can check in sooner.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OPERATION
Brake-shift interlock
This vehicle is equipped with a brake-shift interlock feature that prevents
the gearshift lever from being moved from P (Park) when the ignition is
in the ON position unless brake pedal is depressed.
If you cannot move the gearshift lever out of P (Park) with ignition in
the ON position and the brake pedal depressed:
1. Apply the parking brake, turn ignition key to LOCK, then remove the
key.
2. Locate the access cover plate to
the brake-shift interlock override. It
is located on the underside of the
steering column.

I have a Ford Explorer 2005 with same problem.. i cannot shift gear out of parking...i tried to reset the brake safety interlock but thats not working too...any suggestion what shall i do?

Did you check the fuses? Is your brake light switch working?
