I had the truck in park on a sort of steep uphill incline, parking brake on. Time to go - took off the parking brake, couldn't get her out of Park. Kept trying at it, and it went, I kind of muscled it some and I know I probably shouldn't have, but there wasn't really much of an alternative at this point.
So I get it in drive and promptly rolled down the hill backwards. Fortunately I was in a place where I could do this safely.
At the bottom of the hill, I figure out that my shifter has somehow skipped a notch. So when the shifter is in "P" position, the vehicle's in park... and it stays in park when I shift into "R". I have to shift to "N" in order to reverse. Everything seems to work right (the parking aid thing functions properly when the shifter indicates "N", etc.). "3" appears to be my drive gear - once I got up to cruising speed (~45mph) I attempted to test to see whether I was in drive or 3, by turning overdrive off once I'd gotten into what I believed to be high gear. Turning overdrive off did make it jump down a gear. So I believe I may be in the truck's drive gear when the shifter indicates "3". "2" and "1" I didn't mess with a whole lot, but I suspect they're oriented one off as well.
Guys, I have no idea what to do here. Of course I had to drive the vehicle home, couldn't leave it where it was, and the entire drive seemed to be smooth - the vehicle drove the same, sounded the same, felt the same as it normally does, just that I am not showing the proper gear.
There's one other thing. I drove for maybe 200 feet and pulled over right when I got up the hill, wanted to see if I could put it in park, turn her off, and turn her back on and see if everything would be alright ... just before I parked her, I heard kind of a loud clang - just once - from what sounded like somewhere under the vehicle.
My best guess is that somehow my shifter is out of place, and that the transmission itself is fine. But I have no idea why this would be, how to go about fixing it, what it would cost to have the dealership tend to it, and most importantly: if I am opening myself up to some kind of damage by driving the vehicle with it in this condition.
I really hope someone here knows better than I do what this is and what to do about it. Please help!! Thanks kindly, folks.
