I have a 97 Explorer XLT 4x4 SOHC, it has had a shifting problem. It will not shift until around 3200 RPM for 3rd and 4th gear and won't go into overdrive. My speedo also will not work. It is giving me two trouble codes, P0500 (Speedo malfunction) and P0715 (Turbine input shaft speed sensor). I have replaced the speedo sensor on the transfer case, but that didn't solve the speedo problem. I know a bit about cars, having grown up working on them, but am having trouble with this one. I do snowmobiles and newer vehicles.:D

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, what was the prblem with the shifting and speedo? this is causing me trouble too

What happens if you start driving, and put it in manual 2? Has the transmission ever completely missed a shift, and went into “neutral” for a minute? OD light flashing? Does the speedometer function at all?

Wild guess that the second gear band snapped, although I’d expect a code about incorrect gear ratio.

Given that info, I'd suspect the turbine speed sensor, maybe first check wiring continuity to it and the connector. You can probably also measure for a low voltage AC pulse coming from it (when driving, have to rig something up) or parked, for resistance of the coil inside, both at the sensor and remotely across the wiring harness to the ECM/PCM. I don't know what resistance it should read, but based on some other inductive coil speed sensors, I'd guess a few hundred+ ohms.

Also: 2nd gen issues? Try this first!

I get that p0500 on my 99
It was the abs sensor on the rear diff not sure if yours has one there or not
