Afternoon all

it’s been pretty cold here this week. Had some snow this morning but now it’s all gone. Went to take the truck for a spin around the neighborhood (took it out for the the other day and had no problems).

It starts fine. Kinda high idle but sinners down. Let it sit for a min or 2 as it’s been sitting a few days and it’s bone cold. I go to put it into gear and nothing. I let off the brake and it rolls back (because of the ground). I put it in Park. Wait a few. Then try reverse. Nothing. Back to Park. Then slowly I put it in reverse to go to drive and reverse works. Then to Park. Then to drive and it shifts into gear.

I know I need an oil change, that’s for sure. I’m not too far over the change time as I’m not driving this on the reg. I’ll probably let it run and warm up to check and just get a few quarts and add it myself since I have this fear if I drive it anywhere it will blow up. I’ll check the transmission oil too.

Can you check both oils when the truck hasn’t been running. Or best after the engines warmed up? I remember my dad telling me years back to check the transmission (I think) the car has to be warmed up and running, not so much for the oil, but that was our old mercury cougar and more spring like weather.

thanks.

Trans fluid has to be checked with engine running in park and after it's been running for a few minutes -warmed up a bit. The engine does not need to be ran first, it's most accurate reading after sitting - in other words you have to wait for all the oil to drip back down to the pan if you just ran it and decide you want to check it.
Sounds like your trans fluid could be low with the shifting issue.

It sounds better when someone else says it and it’s not all jumbled up in my head.

thanks again!!!

Unless you are up for doing transmission work I wouldn’t bother changing the oil just yet.
