What shock absorbers do you have? and where did you get them from?

I've got standard ones on so far and was just wondering, I've checked eBay but can only find shocks for Explorers without the auto ride height.

I had Rancho RS5000's on my 2nd Gen. Loved them. Great ride, great off road. Far better than the stock ones.

I think that they'll be an internet purchase then.... I don't think you can get them over here... I did a quick google search and nobody over here does anything other than for the Explorer without the auto ride height...

If you can wait just grab them when you're over here in a couple of months. Save on shipping and whatnot.

true.. but I'm on a really tight budget when I come over... I'm quitting my job, so what I can save will have to last me, unless I can get a job over there then I'm good!... I'll be shipping the Explorer over once I get a job n work permit sorted out...

Rancho shocks are a great choice for the Explorer.

amazon.com is the cheapest place I found for the 5000 series.

Fronts are RS5229-----Rears are RS5185

Fronts are going for $44--Rears are going for $44 as well.

If you need a bigger size than stock (depending on lift) Rancho has a catalog you can download, to find the sizes and part #'s.
http://www.gorancho.com/products/catalog.php

If you want an adjustable shock, I would recommend the RS9000XL series, about twice the price, but the ride is twice as nice :) Good for on and off road.
Cheapest place I found the RS9000 series is from my4by.com

I have done bizz with both sites and can only say great things about them both.
One more thing, Monroe and Rancho are made by the same company, Rancho is just a step up from the Monroe.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys... I've just been told my battery is toast.. so I think I'm gonna wait now until after I come back in February otherwise it's just gonna eat into my money and I'll have to cut my trip short... and that's not good!

FWIW, I've shopped at my4by.com also and was immensly impressed with the service. They had the lowest prices on shocks anywhere so I was weary about ordering, but they arrived 2 days after I ordered and the service guy couldn't have been any nicer helping me get the right parts. Now they're giving away a free wireless remote with rancho adjustable shocks so I think it may be time to place my second order with them and upgrade to the adjustables because they also have the lowest price I can find on those.

Hi,
when you are recommending Rancho's as replacement shocks you do know that the UK spec Explorer has rear self leveling air ride shocks as standard. I used Monroe 40006 and 40007 on mine uses same air line and works a treat.

Munro auto air ride control

I have a 2000 model limited with the auto air ride control. I was going to get the munro as someone told me they work with the ARC by just plugging in the air lines as you have, but the person I spoke to at the shop did not think they would work.

If yours work does it keep the car level under heavy tow loads and did you do anything to the springs to beef them up. I was about to take off the ARC and just put the rancho's on but I have to beef up the springs as they sit to low for standard shocks.

Monroe air ride shocks

Hi Paul,

All my local garage did was to take off my original shocks and replaced the Monroe's nothing was done to the leaf springs, everything just worked, my dashboard light used to come on after filling up with petrol and driving about 10 miles, now I spend my time watching the dash for the light, the ride height is the same loaded or unloaded, one difference is that my pump used to cycle on and off now after a few seconds it stops and the height is maintained.

Terry.

Hi Terry

where did you get them from ( am i right in saying 40006 is front and 4007 is rear?) how much were they?

Andy

Hi Andy,

they are both rear left and right, got them from rockauto.com, if you look at threads on Exploreforum vendors there is a discount code for them.

Thanks you guys for mentioning that site. I was searching google to find a review on them because there prices seem too good to be true, but I couldn't find a single bad word about them and this forum thread came up in the google results and since you guys said they were a good company I bought from them. They are located in Washington state. I ordered my shocks yesterday morning Monday and when I got home from work tonight they were at my front door. ONE DAY DELIVERY! I'm on the other side of the country from these guys so I expected Friday at the earliest!!! Amazing. ive bought a lot of stuff online from ebay and amazon and they have never delivered in one day. Just wanna say my4by has my vote.

It takes me a while to get moving so I only just ordered mine today. I am in Aus so paid for express priority O/S delivery. (Take 3 months to order then want fast delivery, makes sense).

Real cheap from rockauto compared to the few hundred each and the three month delivery if I ordered them from Monro Australia.

Anyone had any problems fitting them. Looks Ok and a few threads have photo's etc, most say its pretty easy but did any of ypou run into trouble.
