I have been hunting around looking for new shocks since I have my front end torn apart right now, and am having a difficult time finding shocks that will work with a 6" lift. The ones I would really like are the Bilstein 5100s, but they only make those for the 4" applications, and do not list a part # for rear shocks. Before the 5100s, I was considering the RS900s, but from what I remember, they do not offer them in 6" applications either. What are the shocks some of you 6" guys are running? Suggestions?

Well what about this: Does anyone know the shock measurements needed to get the right shock for a 6" lift on first gen Explorers? I think at this point I am just going to order some Bilstein 5150s, but I need to know the measurements of something that would work. Think I would be okay measuring the Skyjacker shocks that came with the lift? Because right now I have no way to check the compressed and extended limits of my suspension. Suggestions?

Yeah I would like to know this info too.

Free bump.

Bueller?????

Jeff - :navajo:

hehe, Bueller as in Ferris Buellers Day Off :D Where Ben Stein was calling the role one day and Ferris was not there, he kept going "Bueller?.......Bueller?...." :p

I need this info to. lol What bueller? Oh bueller!

I'm curious also.

I have run into the same issue, but with getting shocks for my yet to be installed Skyjacker 4" lift.. The parts guy told me to install the lift then measure for shocks. He said to measure the distance from mount to mount while under full compression and full droop... He could then cross reference this info will all shocks to find ones that match.

Bueller......anyone?.....Bueller

Yeah, and I would do that, but right now I do not have any way to cycle my suspension, it's in pieces :D I think I am going to call Bilstein and see if they can help any.

Dang it, I have to call them back tomorrow because both of the gurus that I can talk to are out of town. But the guy I did talk to was telling me good things, so maybe tomorrow I will have some part #s :D

*should be retitled, "The Bueller Thread"*

Just got home from class and called them. Both of they guys that I was referred to yesterday are unavailable right now :( One was on the phone and the other is out to lunch.....so I will have to wait a little bit to call back. But I have to be to work in 45 minutes!!!

Called them again just a few minutes ago, and this time I got the chance to talk to one of the guys I was referred to. Well, he referred me to yet another guy, and that guy is out of town until Monday. But it sounds like he is the MAN to talk to, considering the guy I talked to today said Shane (the MAN) is head of their offroad department. So, if the saying "good things come to those who wait" holds true, then something wicked awesome is going to happen on Monday :D

I was thinking that James Duff had some extra long shocks. Actually I just checked and they are extra long travel shocks. Do you need 15" of vertical travel?

I really do not have any idea as to how much travel/compression I will need. That is partly why I was calling Bilstein because I figured if anyone could tell me what I needed, they could. And thats also part of the reason for this thread :D

Did not get the chance to call today, but will do so tomorrow. And I do know that at full droop, the shock will need to be about 22" long. For the front end anyways..

if you need a 22" long shock the RS5012's will work great you will have about 1.5" of travel in teh shock left at full droop.

I am running them on the rear of my 97 and i dont max them out. i did have to use the little shock mount thingy that comes int e box and drill a new hole in the rear x-member where the shocks mount for the rear. That allowed me to mount a shock eye instead of Ford's fubared design. If you want a Rs900 go with a RS9012, rs5000, go with a rs5012, and a RSX will be a RSX 11012

Part Numbers

I just got off the phone with the guy at Bilstein, and they do not have a 5150 with the correct valving for the front of the Explorer, but he suggested one that would work for the rear, #BF5-A196-H1. He also found some 5100s that would work for the rear, #BE5-6248-H5 and for the front #BE5-6526-H5. Also, for the rear they have the T fittings so it will fit with the factory mounting holes #423472, as well as a sleeve for the bottom eyelet #413460. He also told me that their new T fitting is more heavy duty than the factory ones, and that they are kind of a hassle to install, but once they're in, they're in. So it looks like I will be able to go 5100s all the way around :D

Thanks for the suggestion Chad, I have had Ranchos before and I thought they were pretty good, but I have always wanted to try something from Bilstein. I just wish I could get my hands on these before Tellico....
