Hello all, I did a search on shocks but could not find what i was looking for. I would like to start doing some mild to moderate offroading, not rock crawling just playing in the dirt and mud. I would like to upgrade my what i believe to be stock shocks with something more heavy duty to take the abuse so i don't start damaging other things, i believe all my suspension components are all original I don't care if it rides rough, i actually prefer the truck like ride. Any suggestions? Thanks
PS: I have been looking at the ranchos, but there are a few different kinds, any recommendations, preferably rough riding. Thanks again. All yeah I have a 1993 xlt

Will these fit a stock explorer i have no lift or anything like that. How much do these cost? Thanks

I think you'd be really happy with Bilstein. I'm not sure if any of you have seen the inside of a Rancho shock, but the quality just isn't there. There is a night and day difference between a Rancho and a Bilstein. KYB would also be a good choice....just my 2 cents.

Would the rancho 5000 be durable enough for offroading?

i used rancho 5000's in an old explorer and i didnt really like the way they handled off road, i switched to a bilstein and i loved it, much better shock...

But will the Ranchos take minor abuse offroad? Also what am i looking at price wise for blisteins, i don't recall ever seeing them, although i have heard of them. Thanks

I had a set of 5000's and after about 8 months of minor offroading every once in a while they sounded like **** everytime i would hit a bump and two of them were leaking fluids so i decided to ditch those and buy the bilsteins. Maybe i just had bad luck with the ranchos because i know they are a pretty reputable shock but i love the bilsteins that i switched to after the ranchos. i believe the rancho 5000's are like $40 a shock and the bilsteins are like $60 a shock.

i just installed a set of kyb monomax shocks on my 2 door 1998 x. they are pretty stiff but i like the way they ride. much better than the oem shocks and are comparable to the bilstein in quality and ride but not as expensive. the cheapest price i found on the net was here

a friend of mine has the bilsteins on his 98 4 door and he likes the way they ride also.
