I've poked around in the different threads but I was looking for a supply list to replace my valve body on a '00 Exploder 4.0 4x4 sohc? Have a rebuilt body from Central but besides a inch/pound torque wrench what else do I need to have on hand? Guess you can guess what I'm doing this weekend.

The thing that stopped me was the reverse servo cover gasket. It was ok, but I didn't want to put it all back together and have it leak and then have to pull everything out again. Since I did it on a holiday weekend, I had to wait a couple of days for the parts store to open

So besides your torque wrench you need:

valve body gaskets

reverse servo cover gasket and o-ring (if you want to replace, I would recommend it)

separator plate (if you are going to upgrade, you may not need to for 2000) if you are getting a rebuilt VB it will already be attached I think

ATF

A big ass drain pan (I have one of those Rubbermaid under bed plastic storage bins which is perfect for this; great suggestion by Fortune410)

Plastic sheeting if you want to keep your garage floor clean (tape it down and drive truck on top)

Lots of patience :p:

Thank you. I'll open it up for the draining process tonight. I keep seeing on the site that the torques specs are in the Haines manual so I'll have to see if I can find them. Brooklyn are the factory Ford replacement gaskets sufficient?

Just to verify Dogfriend's post;
For a 2000 you WILL need the revised
separator plate kit from Ford; it includes
bonded plate gaskets.

Trying not to be too dense here but I've never been inside one of these puppys before so excuse my ignorance. Isn't the seperator plate already on the top of the rebuilt valve body I purchased or is it another piece of the puzzle I need? Thanks, Steve

The regular separator plate needs a gasket. The bonded separator plate has the gasket bonded to it, and will require removal of the old separator plate which is connected to the valve body. # 67 in my list of useful threads has torque specifications.

Brooklyn, I guess I should have a look at my rebuild to see if it has the integral gasket or not. It was all nicely sealed in it's packaging and I didn't want to expose it to extraneous dirt before it was necessary. The range of torque figures for the valve body are kind of wide do you generally set your wrench right in the middle or go for the upper figure?

Thanks again for your invaluable help. Steve

My opinion is to shoot for the upper part of the spec because it has been noted that the bolts sometimes work loose which can lead to leaks past the VB gasket.

Dogfriend that makes good sense. Thank you
