Its taken a loooong time, but I'll finally put some pictures up of how I made my 94 explorer have a 6.5' bed. I absolutely love it. I am always hauling things, and never really liked pickups. Too long, don't protect your stuff (as well as it flying away), and they are not as good off road for the same size. My explorer, which is a small truck, is right on par with full size 150's. This is also great because I can fold my seats any way I want. I mainly keep the back seats down. The carpet comes out in one piece, and no cutting is needed. I can put it back any time I want. Also the plates on the back of the seats can be removed easily. I think they are screwed in with 3/4" wood screws. As far as I can tell, the back of the seats is made of cardboard, so the metal is a huge improvement. All I did was take out the carpet, cut sheets of aluminum (steel would work too) and bed line the whole thing with Herculiner. Don't forget to cut notches for the seat belts. I've hauled everything from chopped wood, to whole desks, and Herculiner has held up. It took about 1 1/2 of those smaller cans to do it. I put on 2 coats.

The fold down seats is a nice option our X's have. I've folded mine down lots of times to haul things around..

Yes, the only other vehicle that really compares is the jeep cherroke. The wrangler is a little better off road in stock form, but lacks towing and hauling.

I can't fit my 99 yamaha yz 250 in there, at least not with the tailgate closed. Luckily I have a trailer for that. Bikes go on the trailer, muddy boots, and other gear get to go in the bed.

I forgot to mention, those "flaps" that cover the back of the seats make great tool boxes.
