I don't know if this is the start of a major problem so let me get some opinions....

When I shift gears from "Park" to "Reverse" or "Reverse" to "Drive" there seems to be a delay of about 1 or 2 seconds before it pops into gear.

Like an idiot, I had the X at the dealer today but forgot to mention. They did replace the belt tensioner, belt and rear speed sensor (all of which but the belt was covered under my used-car warantee - minus my deductable) so I eneded up a with a bill of $230 (ouch). My 30k service is coming up soon too...they want $425!!! I'll have to think about that.

But back to the tranny...after the short delay it drives fine, changes gears normally and really doesn't bother me much at all. So does this sound like the start of a slipping problem that I should have looked at?

BTW, 2000 AWD V8 - 27,000 miles.

Thanks!

My 97 does the same thing, and my brother's 98 does it also, so I hope it's not something to worry about.

try checking your tranny fluid and make sure its full

When my trans. filter came loose it acted like yours is. You might as well change the filter just to be safe. Some new fluid in there cant hurt .

its definitely not normal so, yeah, you should definitely be concerned. i'd start shopping for a reputable shop that'll trouble shoot your tranny for cheap. transmission usually gives warning before it leaves you stranded. this is your warning. :(

No kidding? Luckily I've got an extended warrantee(which this should be covered) but I'm wondering if its worth a trip to a tranny shop for a free diagnosis to see what the dillo is? How long before this problem turns serious? I've only had the car for 2000 miles (out of the 28k) and I've already had a few problems. I'm starting not to like my X :(

Would you say your gear shifts from "P" to "R" and "R" to "D" are instantaneous?

Mine aren't. I think its probably mostly normal. You may need a flush, with that few of miles, it should be safe, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If it stops shifting from one to the other, then it is time to worry ;)

Is a 1 second delay normal for most a/t's when going from P to D, or D to R? Just curious.
