2018 Explorer Sport
Hello,

I recently purchased a 2018 Explorer sport, and am absolutely diggin it.

I see alot of info spread on youtube suggesting a oil catch can to be installed to help with build up on intake valves.

I also see that installing such device would void my warranty. I also read that ford engineers are or have worked on solving this issue?

Please advise, I'm not sure what to do. What steps if any should I take?

BTW, I use top tier gas and oil.

I am more concerned about the waterpump issue and the XM radio issue. My XM raido has been giving me problems the last 3 days and supposedly ford has no fix for it.

Installing a OCC will only mitigate the inevitable, buying you some extra time.
Ford did not drop the newly designed direct plus port injected EB engine into the Explorer yet.
With that being said, installing a bolt-on such as the JLT OCC, will allow quick removal before bringing your vehicle in for service.

Thanks for the reply

I also wondered if they have a update on computer or have updated timing of closure of intake valve to help mitigate build up.
Ill check my local dealer, and see what they know as well

Thanks guys

I thought the 2018 explorer had the updated engine, this is worse than I thought

This problem is pretty low on the list of worries with the 5g explorers. There are plenty of solvent based options that you can use periodically if you are worried about carbon buildup on the valves. CRC is the one I use every yr or ~10K miles. No need for a catch can.

BTW, top tier gas and oil have little to no impact on carbon buildup on the valves in a GDI engine. My ecoboost fusion has had nothing but the cheapest gas and cheapest oil for the last 86K miles.
