Hi board, this is my first post. I have been looking around for a good price for a ford explorer for my first car. I recently saw one in an auto shopper for $1200, but it had 171,000 miles and need new transmission (not to mention its from an impound). Do you think it is worth it? Also how many more miles do you think I can get on it (assuming I get a new tranny).

I have nearly 160,000 on my Navajo, and it shows no signs of fatigue. Runs great, and just passed emmisions easily.

welcome!!! you can expect to pay about 12 to 1500 bucks for a tranny rebuild. as for mileage thats alot not knowing the history of the vehicle. id drive it and look it over real good. if its in really good shape is say yeah maybe. if not id say no.

Thats for the replys guys (so fast!!). I was going to go take a spin in it tommorow and see how it looked and ran. I read at consumersguide.com that a replacement transmission cost around $840. But If I have to spend up to $1500 I wouldn't mind either, as long as it was worth it in the long run.

keep looking if i were u!

u might be able to find one for 1500-2000 with lower clicks and not a broken tranny

Right place at right time, and be slightly nuts.
