I have been debating this question since I bought my X (3/02). I really want to put a lift on it with 31's, but I have a few dilemas. First is money. I am a college student with little to no money at times. Second being the tires. The tires that are on my X, bought by the previous owner, are virtually brand new (10/01). So what do ya'll think? Should I get a lift and new tires on my X or what? I was thinking 2'' coil spacer/shackle or 3''body lift. Thanks in advance.

if you only want 31's....then go with the shackles and spacers. you can probably fit 31's with minimal rubbing stock, but to be on the safe side, spacers and shackels will keep you clear, and they are cheap too! they are also a lot easier to put on than a body lift.

I would say if you are in college and you already have trouble with money I would say "NO".

Spend your money on getting thru school then you can do whatever you want to your Explorer.
Do you plan on doing a lot of fourwheeling? If not then wait because once you get started you will keep wanting to do more.
I just wanted a lift to do some mild fourwheeling and now my Explorer sets more then we drive it just because you spend so much money on tires and everything you want to just use it for wheeling.

I am glad we have done the things we have with the Explorer but it's not a daily driver anymore and I would say most people that do big mods end up not driving them as often as they did before.

This is my .02 cents, I hope it helps.

Thanks for the response Perry and riffman. I think I am just gonna hold out and wait 'til I wrap up college or get a nice co-op before I start making the "big" mods to my X. In the meantime, you may see me beating up my stocker on some East Coast trails. Happy Wheeling!
