Hello, all,

I have a 97 Eddie Bauer with a 5.0L engine, AWD, and an automatic transmission with OD. It also has the towing package. It has approx 106K miles on it.

I have noticed sometimes that when I get up to 40 MPH, the EX "shudders" for a second or two when changing from one gear to the next. Not like when pressing the brakes on wheels that have not been aligned--it is more like a shudder from automatic 4wd hubs engaging and getting up to speed. It does not happen all the time, though. In fact, the only thing that all of the occurrences have had in common is the fact that they occur (or seem to occur) at 40 MPH.

Suspecting that this might be a tranny issue, I have checked the tranny fluid level and coloring to see if it needs to be replaced. The level is fine, and the fluid does not appear to be dirty, which (I think) means that the tranny is not the problem.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be, and whether I should be worried that a major repair is impending? More likely the AWD transfer case than the tranny, maybe? BTW, no "check engine" light has come on and my OBD-II code reader told me "no codes" to report when I plugged it in the other day just to confirm that, if this helps.

Thanks for any info you've got.
