I had a 91 Explorer and now I have a 2000 Ranger. I found that the BBK throttle body is the same p/n for both. (BBK1580). Both the 4.0. I have seen the Granatelli MAF sensor for like $350 and the BBK throttle body for $200. I have just recently heard of the PRO-M MAF sensor. I know they make one for the X, but like the BBK do you think that it would be the same one for a 91 X and a Y2K Ranger? I also don't know where to find one and how much they go for. All I have is a K&N FIPK and a Gibson dual cat back. Should I be looking into a computer B-4 I do the tb/maf upgrades? I am looking for the "bang-for-the-buck" aspect. Please if you have done these mods or know someone who has, I would love the input.

Your 91 has the 4.0 OHV
Parts available are listed below...
-BBK TB (only one offered for the OHV)
-Pro-M or Granatelli MASS Air
-There are also U/D Pullies available, and that aluminum intake of yours could easily be ported.

Now the 2000 Ranger has either got an SOHC or an OHV 4.0
If the OHV all the above will cross over.
If it is the SOHC....
-Ford racing TB for the 4.6 Mustang ;)
-C&L MAF
-U/D Pullies

You should wait to get the chip for your 91 untill after you have all of the engine mods done. That way you only need the 1 burn to get everything right. With the Ranger, do it when you want, but get a handheld flasher and you can adjust your own tunes with the Superchips software.

I don't own the explorer anymore. My new truck is the ranger. Where can I find the best prices for the MAFs and TBs? I've never even seen the underdrive pullies for the X/Ranger. Where can I find those too!! Is a tb spacer even worth the money?

Check summit racing for fair prices, and do a search on here for the specific information on all of these parts.

More simply run a search for aldive's thread in the Elite Explorer Registry. It'll likely be near the top of the first couple pages. He has done and reviewed all of the above plus a few on the SOHC 4.0.

I still do not know which motor you have for sure in the Ranger. If it is the OHV follow the link in my sig for details on particular additions and where i got them as well as commentary. There is a table of contents on page 1 which will direct you to the info needed for the OHV motor

I DEFFINATELY have the OHV. Sorry that was supposed to be in my last response. I went to Summit and they only show the BBK TB. It is $200-. I have found u/d pullys for a 3.0 but never a 4.0. I just did'nt know if someone knows where to get a BBK for cheaper or a great price on a MAF sensor. Also is there a MAF sensor I should stay away from because of stock injectors or calibration issues? I have tried all day yesterday to search for this info, but I'm getting a little info and more questions!!! Sorry for being a p.i.t.a. I just dont want to drop the cash on electrical products and have them not work!

I found the pullys for the 4.0. They are from "Underdog". Now another question! I have an 800 watt amp for my subs, will the under drive for the alt. still suply the amp or should I go with the over drive and give up that minimal hp? Every little bit counts!! :(

The BBK is the only TB I am aware of for the 4.0 OHV. It was originally produced for use with their now discontinued BBK Instacharger. Summit had the best price when I bought mine, However I chose to support a site sponsor and ordered through explorerexpress.com.

Honestly a MAF for your application is not worth the money. Late Model 4.0's came with a 70 mm MAF from the factory. You can upgrade if you like, but I would stick with the ford unit which will cover your air needs short of adding a chunk of boost. There are several units which would work if you really want to spend the couple hundred though. I DO NOT recommend Pro-M due to difficulty tuning to their electronics. Granatelli makes a unit, and I believe C&L's unit from the mustang can be adapted, but that may be only SOHC.

For the Underdrive pulleys the companies that I have heard of are Underdog and ASP.
As to your charging issue......Maybe a problem maybe not......seems to be quite variable. Aldive is running a high amp alternator and Optima Battery. He has had no issues, nor any lights diming at stoplights, charge rate dropping when at idle, etc.....
However on my Mustang I have all of those problems. Though honestly I have done nothing to upgrade my charging system yet. All in all I personally do not recommend pulleys. They did give me a bit of power on the stang, but IMO not enough to justify the problems or the money that needs to be spent to correct them......Just my .02 and I know there are others on here that disagree with that opinion.

One thing that would free up some pony for you and I do recommend is upgrading to an electric fan.....

One thing to put into perspective that this site often neglects to add....None of these are true power mods. They are all supporting modifications that are done to accomodate larger upgrades such as Heads, Cam, Intake Manifold, Power adders, or etc. True you will see some minor gains from the addition of these parts, but all in all Ford has calibrated the engine accessories to work with what you have. Yea I know I bolted all these goodies onto my X also, but I planned on having the heads cleaned up and adding the comp cam back then. Now I say screw it I want a 5.0 in there. Do Not expect to gain more than 20-30 HP from all of the above and your current intake/exhaust.

The UDP ( crank/damper ) for the SOHC and OHV are the same.

I got mine from Doug at Bama Chips ( ,http://www.bamachips.com/ ). I also recommend Wayne at Underdog Performance ( http://underdog-performance.com/ ).

I am very pleased with the power and most especially the gas mileage netted from underdriving.

Good luck .....

Definately a worthy mod; highly recommended.

aldive, Did you do all of your pullies or just the crank? I did put in my BBK today (had it overnighted) and I'll find out tomorrow with a 6 hr trip to Maine what kind of difference it makes. I had luck today with a search! I found out how to adjust the I.A.C.!! I'm so psyched!!! LOL

I did the crank and waterpump in underdrive and the alternator in overdrive.
Works well together.
