can someone please list a few things (with directions if possible) on what I could do to "tune-up" my explorer by myself.. i have a 1997 XLT and i'm about to 54,500 miles and i know around 60,000 miles you should get a tune-up.. and i think i will but i just wanna know what types of things i can do to keep it running smooth.. all the liquids were checked at 51,000 miles so they should be ok.. i want a K&N filter.. i just took mine out to clean it off and it's lookin like crap, so that would help the air-flow.. just give me a few simple ideas i could do for myself. thanks!

Do the mother of all tune-ups: change the plugs and wires. Stick with Motorcraft brands to avoid problems. Double Platinum plugs and Motorcraft 8mm wires. Also, Ford recommends you change the Tranny fluids at 60k. Make sure you do this if you haven't already.

Give consideration to switching to synthetic fluids all around.

I would also clean the MAF.
