i just bought a 97 ford explorer xlt 5.0 awd it has some minor front end damage enough to damage the header panel idk if that has any significance or not but the ambient air temp almost always reads -40 some times it will read correct but not for more then a few minutes. does anyone know where the sensor is located

I'd be thinking temp sensor as it's located on the rad support/header panel. If available I'd try one from the salvage yard rather than spending the money on a new one. In my experience they rarely fail on their own.

RockAuto lists their better sensor at $18.49 (+ shipping)
