Bought a new set of BFG A/T's today. The guy a Discount tire wanted to "sipe" my tires. I've heard of this yet have no first hand experience with it. Anyone have an opinion? Haven't done it yet.

Thanks

I think the BFG All-Terrains come with plenty of siping. I think siping is meant for tires like the Mud-Terrains that have large blocks of solid rubber. Siping would help a mud tire grip better on wet or icy roads.

Did you get the old AT or the new AT KO?

The new AT KO has tons of sipes on the tire already and you'd be wasting money on doing it.

You mean when I go around a corner at high speeds my BFG Muds are not supposed to loose traction and spin? Dead Link Removed Ahh man I just love doing that though! Specially when I start to fish tail and reach 5500 rpm in first gear at 25mph! I don't know if I would want sipping if it didn't allow me to do this. Dead Link Removed

Ditto Khoa.

But additionally, be aware that while siping is "Great" for road milss, on offroad the sipes catch gravel/etc and serve to wear tread down in the interior sipes. If you got the KO's like I just did, do NOT sipe them. But since it is such a great thing on other road tires, go for it. It's great stuff as long as it's applied to its proper application.

And Ryan,
Remind me not to ride with you when me meet up. Dead Link Removed

Ok, I have a related question. I'm looking at putting on 31" MT's either BFG or Dunlop. I do a lot of towing and am frequently on a wet roads and slippery boat ramps. Plus I screwed up and bought a 2wd

Currently I am running 235 Mich. LTX M/S and although they are too small this stick like glue in the water and on the ramp.

Although the MT's look a heck of a lot better would I be better off with the AT's?

Thanks

You mean you don't like doing that Gerald? I just do it when no ones around, and when I get the nerve up to do it! I would be dangorous in a real V8 powered rwd car!

Ok, you convinced me. Plus the guy at the counter warned me about MT's and wet traction. I went out this am and bought the BFG AT KO's 31x10.5's. Boy they are nice. No rubbing at all on the 91 but it is definatly time for a lift.

Thanks again.

I got my BFG A/T KO's a little over a month ago and I believe I'll never regret it. Smooth, quiet ride with great traction. I broke 'em in with a 16" snow storm with 2" of ice on top - not unusual for some of you I know, but here in Carolina??? Wow!

Plus, they're tuff lookin' and have the BFG quality...

Hank, how about some type of locker in the rear? It'd probably help a lot on those slippery boat docks.

Hello C.E.

Yes, I was thinking about putting in a locker after I put in a lift but am not sure how much it would help??

I thought I read somewhere that with the factory towing package I have a limited slip rear end. I have not checked the tag on the pumpkin or on the door yet but I know I broke both rear wheels loose at the same time on dry ground the other day pulling a palm tree out of my yard.

Thanks for the input.

Hank,
You got 31's under you'91?? No rubbing at all? Hmmm - I thought I would have to be limited to 30's on my '93. I've been reading the threads here and haven't gotten a definitive answer one way or another on 31's... with no lift...

Hi Jon,

Yes! No rubbing And they are great. Not to noisy either. Got them from Tire Kingdom (SE Cape) on Friday AM. Not too painful but was still $502.19. I was going to go with the Dunlop Mud Rovers but the cost would have been 689.00 and everyone (other posts and dealer) warned against the MT's and wet traction.

I'm going to start out with the coil spring spacer and add-a-leaf lift first. It will look a little better than it does now. I'm sure the bug will hit again and I'll end up going higher.

We might be heading downtown this weekend. I'll let you know and you can take a look.

Best regards.

JonM,
YES you can run 31's without rubbing. I ran 31" BFG A/T's on my '93 for about 4 years while I saved up the money for a suspension and body lift. I ran them on the stock wheels with no problems. (even in moab!).
