I put a new clutch in my F250, and I'm trying to put the trans back on. It won't go that last inch or two to fit up tight to the engine, and I'm thinking maybe the throwout bearing on the slave needs to be locked into a compressed position? I can see the throwout up against the pressure plate. The manual doesn't mention anything about this.
It took a little doing to get the tranny up and into position, so I don't want to drop it again unless I have to.

Anyone know?

Two things. It is helpful if you have a dummy shaft when you install the clutch, it needs to be centered as near prefect as possible, else the shaft won't line up with the bearing in the flywheel.

Number two, if it lines up put the transmission in gear and turn the shaft on the tail end of the tranny until the front shaft lines up with the clutch plate splines.

The slave cylinder should not be causing your problem if everything is lined up properly.

Could be possible that the input shaft is hitting/not lining up with the pilot bushing( if it has one).

Dunno about the Throw out bearing needing to be lock into position since it should already be in the disengaged position after installing it.

worst case scenario would be if you can get a couple bolts started and see if the trans will walk up to the engine by tighten them.

BTW didn't have a hard time getting this out too? Ever figure out what was causing it?

I did use the alignment tool, or dummy shaft, when bolting on the clutch.
I'll try spinning the tail to line up the splines, good idea.

Put a little pressure on the tranny as you turn the tail shaft, you should be able to feel when they line up.

I always put it in the one to one gear when lining the splines, that seemed to work best for me.

Yes, I did have a thread about that. :o I blame my Haynes manual. ;)There was two small bolts, not mentioned in the manual, holding the plate that's behind the flywheel onto the bellhousing. (why can't I think of the name of that plate now?)

One thread to remove the tranny, one to install it. I am quite the mechanic! :dunno:

Pensa, thanks, I'll try that in the AM.

You're welcome.

One other thing that I think you already know, there is a right and a wrong way to put the clutch plate in. I don't think it would prevent the tranny from bolting up, but it would cause problems.

dust cover is what I always called.. although, in your case, I'd say 'ARG' cover.

Well I got it mated up today. :D I wouldn't go, wouldn't go, wouldn't go, so I got frustrated and got a little violent with it, and bingo it went in.

Thanks for all the advise.

You know what they say, when all else fails get a bigger hammer.LOL:hammer:
