- 02 explorer XLT 4.0 4x4
Hello and I'm glad go be a new member to this forum! Iv used this site for many great tips and tricks and finally decided to join! Hate to ask for help on my first post but It would be greatly appreciated!
I have an 2002 explorer XLT 4.0 non flex with 4x4. Currently 170,100 miles. Bought it at 152,x.. right after the previous owner did a full tuneup and new trans. Noticed the rearend agas been rebuilt and maintenance has been kept up. Since purchasing I have done rear wheel bearings, brakes all around, tires, sway bar bushings, upper ball joints, coolant flush, thermostat housing, intake gaskets, IAC, and I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.
But ever since iv owned it, there seems to always have been a slight miss at idle? You can feel it when at idle. i checked fuel pressure, 67 psi at idle, and as soon as engine shut off, psi drops to about 45 psi, not sure if its related. No CEL had before once or twice for lean faults bank 1 but they clear themselves. Found EGR was loose and reseated light has never came back. But now I'm stumped on the miss type idle. Also when cold and drive to gas station ( 2 minutes down the road on way to work) I leave it running. And sometimes when I go to reverse RPMs will drop and it'll stutter or stall out, still no CEL and no faults stored. I have been a tech for Subaru dealership and now in parts department. I am mechanically inclined. But this problem has got me and other techs stumped. I'm thinking one of my injector orings is leaking and debating on removing and benchflowing all injector as well as new intake gaskets again and valve cover gaskets since they are leaking.
Also would like to say it doesn't matter if its hot or cold still feels the same, and seems MPGs are going down. Used to get over 300 miles per tank in the city, now about 200 range.
Any input would be helpful as of what else to look for or if I'm on the right track.
Once again thank you for taking your time read this and hope you can help out! Thanks!
