What would cause the truck to loose an enormous amount of power on an incline.. (maybe my ego was adding to the painful experience as it were)... But really... Old crappy cars loose power like that on an incline .. not MY 93 explorer...!!!... Really seems just fine on the flat stuff... crappy gas mileage regardless of what I do... but ..

ANyhow... what are the target trouble makers I should be focusing my attention on... We have dirtbikes I plan on towing in a couple weeks... I don't want to come to a dead stop on the Altimont !! :o(

bad mpg ..... could be a bad fuel pressure regulator ( is the exhaust sooty?)

also maybe look at hte fuel pump and pressure test it with a guage ...could be that the either the pump is going bad or the fuel filter is getting clogged.

changeing the fuel filter would be the quickest thing to do and check .

def it sounds like a fuel issue to me

weird i thought i just had a gutless car but appearently its not normal.

my explorer is unholy going up hills...im stuck down in 2nd almost constantly. and the other day i tried to pull onto the road from a turn out that was up hill....and i almost couldnt....it had no power to pull it up the hill. and as of lately its started running crappy on accel after running for an hour or more....its pissing me off. but my fuel mileage is just as normal as ever...about 15-16. i already replaced the fuel filter. the heads injectors and plugs are new as well. im thinking i need to start with a new maf since mine has some external damage to the case. and also check my fuel pressure.

ill be keeping my eye on this one

I have no problems with hills.... She will jump right up them, 190 grand on her , She purrs like a kitten

My 5 speed manual hauls ass for the most part. Thinking it needs plugs and wires though.

I'll bet your catalytic converter has slagged out. Mine on several cars have, and it starts by not being able to climb hills worth a darn. Mine seem to last to about 160,000 miles before needing replacement. It clogs up the exhaust and the mileage drops through the floor as well.

i just put a new cat on it when i did the heads (which was about 1500 miles ago)....it was a universal one though.....maybe il get it back off and pound the guts out. lol! only if its bad. :shifty_ey

the weirdest thing is that the truck runs great...i can pull into traffic fine i can pass fine and i can pull from a stop pretty fast...its just when im going uphill....gutless.

changed the filter and it improved a bit...seems to hold on a little more for me... sorta like the damn thing compromised...

F*d up thing is that the fuel filter had neither type of line connections listed in my chilton book... It was just straight fuel line with a metal fitting on the end which looked like it just slipped onto the fuel filters ends... No special pressure points to squeeze.. no special cover to pop off... not even the quick connect fitting.... So out of frustration I started tearing at the thing..
.. eventually ripped it off... :o).. but then realized that I had damaged it a bit... (filter looked like crap... fuel line ends just a little beat up.. )

either way.. seemed to improve slightly.. JUST TO GET TO THE LAKE.. and when I stopped at the ranger station could hear a little click...

Got to my camp site... started truck after about 1 day of camping and Heard a loud.. CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK.. that increased with the RPM's and seemed to be coming from right the very top of the engine.. litterally if a little munchkin took a tiny metal stick and began hitting the metal right under the upper intake ...

It's killing me...! Literally... I think I will fix the PING CLICK thing and sadly let her go..

the "tick / ping " you hear may be the lower intake manifold is loose.

the reason i say this is that from wrenching all over and putting stress leaning over engine componets could have made an unknown problem known / now . my truck i was noticeing a bad ping whenever i would go over hills or just when i tried to punch down on the gas .....after looking into other things like "lifter tick / added fix in a can stuff " i found out that when i moved a bolt up front on the lower intake manifold i just spun freelly !

problem found , the lower intake bolts on these engine's will free up over the years and the manifold bolts will back out .

i took off the upper intake system and re-torqued the bolts and no more ping / lifter noise .....just now i have a lower intake gasket problem and leaks around the front of the engine ( been leaking that way for over a year and a half like this )

Honestly any 1993 vehicle is somewhat of a project rig. You could have a Toyota in that year and you'll still have problems. You have to be commited to wrenching on it..
