I have two small dents on my roof. They are only about an 1 by half inch but they are a little deep. Of course they collect water so they are rusted dents. What would be the best way to remove the rust, fill the dent and paint over with some kind of primer then ford touch paint. I dont even care too much about it being the same color cause you can't seee it on my roof anyway, I just dont want the dents to rust through.

go to this website and order a spray can of your paint, about 25$ before shipping. Touch up paint with the brush wont fix what you are about to do.

sand it out til the rust is GONE. sand nearby paint to make a smooth surface and get rid of any nearby areas where paint can flake. if your dent is the size of a quarter your looking to clean an area a little bit bigger than a silver dollar. then fill it with bondo, let it dry and sand til the bondo is COMPLETELY SMOOTH you should not feel any edges or differences between the bondo and your roof. If you are not comfortable with bondo, read the packaging and try it out on some scrap metal to get an idea. that tiny little bottle of hardener you get with the jar, really is enough to do the whole jar. it mixes sort of like JB weld if you have ever used that. more hardener = faster dry time, but increased likely hood of cracking. once your bondo is sanded smooth then lay a coat of primer, gray works, if your truck is white get white primer if you can. Something designed for automotive use will be best. self etching is ok, but not necessary in this instance. let primer dry for about 5 mins then spray a few light coats of your touch up paint. Adding a good quality clear coat spray is also needed. once your color coat is set, let that sit 10-15 minutes then spray 4-5 light coats of your clear. light coats ate the key to perfection when using spray paint. once it dries completely (safe to drive in 12-24 hours) completely dry/cured in about a week. you will either want to do nothing or wet sand it to get the haze out of it. if you are uneasy with wet sanding don't bother, it is your roof and you'll only see it to wash it. Google wet sanding, you'll get lots of advice.

Thanks for the reply and the link to the paint site.
