Has anyone heard of the 2011+ Explorer being put through the IIHS small overlap test? *EDIT* (I can see on the IIHS site they haven't tested the vehicle. Disturbing.)

I can't find any on their site except for the oblique. I'm curious as to how the Explorer rated. The Escape didn't look too hot.

*EDIT* Is there another organization that tests vehicles?

Right, that's the oblique. Pretty sobering. I was really looking for the small overlap, but that hasn't been performed on the new Explorer.

The small overlap is scary. That's the one where you'll end up catching just the edge of an oncoming vehicle at highway speeds.

I think the Volvo is the best in this case. I mean, Ford did get its safety tech from Volvo. Hopefully some of that transferred into the Explorer. I would look at Volvo's as a benchmark for what a Ford vehicle's safety features should be. The Explorer should be a bit the same but with cheaper materials in its structure.

Here's the Escape. Looked a bit scary because the person's head went in between the airbags... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI5Pb0y3kLM

I was watching the Volvo a few days ago. I'd like to think that Ford transferred some of that tech, but in looking at how the Escape "survived" I don't think it would have.

Videos like this are why my daughter's car seat stays on the passenger side of the vehicle.
