Smog Guru's HELP! barely FAILED

[PRE-H20]

hey guys.... i have 94 explorer sport

today it failed the smog..... BARELY.

everything passed except hydro-carbons (?)..... H/C

the state allows 83 and mine was at 88 and that = failure.

the tech said that mine olg dod BARELY failed....

any idea on how to get it to pass?

my old dog has 227K and runs smooth...... tired but it is dependable....... i want to keep it so smog needs to happen for me......

i am NOT NOT NOT a mechanic so please keep that in mind!.......

...Can you add where you are at in Calif....???

...When was your last full tune up and have you had your vehicle checked by a friend or mechanic with a scanner...They may find some stored info that wouldn't cause a check engine light but would show a problem developing...

...You might also want to read this and see if you did the "Basic" things before smog testing..

Moved to 1st Gen Explorer Forum. The guys here will know more about the OHV motor. The one you started it in has nothing but SOHC motor trucks.

Excessive HCs are essentially unburnt fuel coming from the exhaust pipe. The link mentioned earlier covers it pretty well. It can also come from any fuel leaks, cap, line, evap. Making sure your X is running smooth and efficient should do the trick unless you have some terribly deteriorated lines and hoses.

or you can do what i do here in WA. my county has emissions testing but th county to the north where my parents live doesn't so i registered mine to there address rether than mine.
