2003 EXPLORER, 2001 RANGE
2001 4.0 SOHC, 118,000 miles. Lots of blue smoke on startup after 25 mile drive and then setting 2 hrs. 5W-30 high mileage Mobile, not synthetic. Nothing visible while driving, slowing down and speeding up. Not noticeable in around town type driving, lunch hour stops short runs etc. Compression is 185-190. Rear plugs on left bank carbon up so they are the suspect cylinders. Any ideas besides valve stem seals which is what I suspect.

Classic case of leaky valve-stem seals.

FYI I have used Ford 289 (others similiar,351/400M for instance), as a cheap alternative for leaking valve stem seals. I hahe done this on a number of small block Chevys. I don't know if it will work on the SOHC or not. Just throwing that out there.

I know some people are against Seafoam, but possibly try some though the system and see if it helps at all.

You are already burning oil. Why try cleaning, and making the situation worse.

Thanks for the reply's. I knew better but was hoping for something easy.

Sorry we couldn't give you any better news.
