I'm curious to know if there are reliable aftermarket cams, crank, pistons, etc available for the 4.0 SOHC? I'm wondering about working my motor for what it's worth sometime. 210 hp still seems anemic for a 4.0L engine. It has to be able to do better!

Another question: are there 5-speed manuals available for SOHC motors in, say rangers or B-trucks? I'd love to do a conversion at some point, but can't stand the idea that to have a stick, you have to have the wimpy lawn mower under the hood.

Thanks! :)

EE SOHC supercharger :D

Yes I'm very aware of the blower, but before I invest in one, I want to exploit what I can as far as engine internals first. when all is said and done, it may be time to sell it and move on (lots of miles!) or I'll evaluate whether to get a blower, and whatever I do, put a chip in last. Did your supercharger ever make annoying whining noises? How much would you say you invested in just the supercharger and installation/reprogramming when it was all said and done? I've heard somewhere they can do that...

I just don't know of any engine internals available specifically for the SOHC. I think OHV pistons can be used, but they don't work well with the head design.

The stock Ford internals are pretty beefy and you don't have to worry about them holding up to abuse, but I understand you'd want to get some performance from internals. However, for the money for all new internals (it's like 1200 for the OHV), you're well on your way to being able to slap the blower on, or that can pay for headers.

I had about $7000 in Splat in performance mods including the s/c, headers, exhaust, installs, etc. The blower alone was about $2800 for the kit and about $4000 when it was done including fuel pump and install help.

Yes, it did whine, but it wasn't annoying to me; it sounded sweet!

i need to get a dyno like the saturday midday guys on TNN...I mean Spike TV...so i can keep track of power increases as the mods go on. do you know where i can get a dyno chart of the stock motor? I'm curious to see how the powerbands look.

Why do you say this? They work great, for supercharged applications they'll lower the compression ratio down from the high 9.7:1 to around 8:1. The stock SOHC has a completly flat top piston. The SOHC and OHV's from the late 90's, 97up, share the bottom end components. Like crankshaft and rods. There's not alot available for the SOHC nor the OHV really. You can have the heads ported but there aren't any cams so I wouldn't tear into the engine just for this, especially when you have to remove the engine just to get the timing correct to put the heads back on.

Yes, the OHV or SOHC have a manual transmission and some Explorer Sports came with a SOHC and manual. You can do a swap but you'll need the computer and will have to have it reflashed to accept your PATS codes.

Oops, I thought they raised the compression on the SOHC. I was wrong!

4.0 SOHC Sport trac owner over here, currently upgrades:

Cold Air intake
Apten Dual Program chip
Random Tech y-pipe and high flow cat
Flowmaster 40 series, 2.25" pipe single in/out

Got dyno'ed and numbers were 189hp and 217 tq. using high octane gas and performance program on chip. Similar numbers have been achieved without using the Random Tech stuff. I also have the 5speed manual tranny, with a hurst billet plus shifter (very nice).
For the record you could always buy a stock cam and have it re-ground the way you would like. I haven't been able to find an aftermarket cam as of yet.

If you have any questions feel free to email, I tend not to recheck threads.

Sweet! Any idea if this is one of the trannies Ford sells refurbished? I know they sell refurbished automatics... Or is a junkyard the best bet? I think I'd do this before a supercharger. Ever since I had a self-destructing 4R70W (i think that's the one from my Mark VIII), I haven't trusted putting more than common power to a Ford automatic.

Other than the tranny and computer, I'd need clutch, clutch pedal, linkage, shifter...and what else? I assume it should bolt on easier than using the M5OD, or is it the same thing?

The stock ford tranny is a mazda R1 (M5OD) tranny. Don't know the details your looking for but if you going through the trouble of changing may I suggest a Borg-Warner T5 instead.

HEY

THEY FINALLY CAME UP WITH ONE (EE Supercharger) for the 4.0 SOHC. ¿¡¿I HAVEN"T SEEN IT ON THE WEBSITE YET!?! I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR ONE OF THOSE!!! I just want to know the Pri$e right now.

It'll probably be in the low $3000s.

EE says $3599.
