In a couple of weeks, I will be pulling the engine to service the front and rear timing chains on my 98 Explorer. When removing the timing cover, do you have to remove the water pump? All data doesnt say to but im not sure if the bolts go through into the block or if they just go into the cover. Just need to know if i need to pickup a waterpump gasket for this repair as well.

Also, are there any special tools needed to remove the engine fan?

For this project, I plan to replace front and rear cam cassettes, replace the crank to jackshaft timing chain, replace both tensioners, and replace both head gaskets. I plan to do the head gaskets because I will already have the engine out and the chains off, and I had/have an issue with coolant loss into oil, so I figured I might as well do it while I have the timing tools and have the engine out. I am not completly sure, or convinced, that its the head gaskets, but once again, its already out and the chains are already off, so its just a few extra steps to do it.

Finally, any tips for this job? Any thing that I can prepare for to go wrong?

Thank you for any input.

James
